Favourites to be the Next Premier League Manager to be Sacked

Eddie Howe - Newcastle United - 6/1

Despite being strongly linked with the newly vacant England job after the departure of Gareth Southgate following Euro 2024, Howe could find himself out of work sooner rather than later.

There is no doubt Howe has done a great job on Tyneside but, having led the Magpies back to the Champions League earlier than expected, he is perhaps now a victim of overperformance. Newcastle's spending has been hindered by the need to remain within the Premier League's controversial profit and sustainability rules, but stars like Alexander Isak have been retained.

A slow start to the season could see pressure build on Howe - especially as Amanda Staveley and partner Mehrdad Ghodoussi have left their roles at the club - but he might yet be offered the chance to take charge of England, although Lee Carsley has been appointed as interim coach.

Erik ten Hag - Manchester United - 6/1

Jim Ratcliffe, the new man in charge at Old Trafford, has put faith in the Dutchman by giving him a new contract. But the fact that the deal was only two years long and the reports that indicated Ten Hag was on the brink ahead of their victory in the FA Cup final, suggests the jury is still out. United have won silverware in each of Ten Hag's two seasons in charge, but they have been nowhere near the Premier League title race on either occasion so far. With 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City now more dominant than ever, Ratcliffe will want to see real signs of progress.

More ex-Ajax stars have joined United for this season with defensive duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui signing on from Bayern Munich for a combined fee of more than £50 million. Ruud van Nistelrooy returning to Old Trafford on the coaching staff adds a further Dutch flavour at United, but could he be a ready-made replacement for Ten Hag if the Red Devils stumble?

Enzo Maresca - Chelsea - 10/1

The Blues had a terrible pre-season and have again spent heavily on young talent, with owner Todd Boehly insisting the strategy will pay off in the long term. Maresca, who led Leicester City to promotion from the Championship last season, needs to show he is the right man for the job.

Chelsea have gone through managers more often than students change their bedding in recent years and it would be little surprise to see the axe fall on Maresca early in the 2024-25 season.

Nuno Espirito Santo - Nottingham Forest - 10/1

Owner Evangelos Marinakis has been ruthless at the City Ground, with high expectations and a large turnover of players making life in the dugout complicated for Forest's managers.

Nuno did solid enough work after succeeding Steve Cooper at the Midlands club but, with heady aspirations from the boardroom, he will need to steer Forest clear of another relegation battle.

Since buying the club in 2017, Greek owner Marinakis has dispensed with the services of Mark Warburton, Aitor Karanka, Martin O'Neill, Sabri Lamouchi, Chris Hughton and Cooper. Most of Forest's managers have lasted 50 or so games under Marinakis, so are Nuno's days numbered?

Steve Cooper - Leicester City - 12/1

It could be a case of 'out of the frying pan and into the fire' for Cooper, who was in demand over the summer. He might come to regret taking over at Leicester instead of opting for another offer.

Financial issues have limited transfer activity at Leicester, who had to cash in on academy star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, a key player in their midfield, during the summer transfer window.

Most Leicester fans accept their side is in for a battle against the drop, but with survival a must to boost the Foxes' finances Cooper will need to hit the ground running at the King Power.

Last Five Premier League Managers to be Sacked

  1. Mauricio Pochettino - Chelsea - 21 May 2024. Pochettino left his position at Stamford Bridge after a single season in charge of the Blues.
  2. David Moyes - West Ham United - 19 May 2024. The Scot had five years in charge at London Stadium but did not sign a new contract this year.
  3. Roy Hodgson - Crystal Palace - 19 February 2024. A period of ill health contributed to the ex-England and Liverpool boss leaving Selhurst Park.
  4. Steve Cooper - Nottingham Forest - 19 December 2023. Not all Forest fans agreed with the move, but staying in the Premier League justified the sacking.
  5. Paul Heckingbottom - Sheffield United - 5 December 2023. One of the worst Premier League teams in recent times, with Heckingbottom paying the price.
