Why Is Top 5 Important in the Premier League?

You read that right, "Top 5" is not a typo. Since the 2023-24 season, UEFA has handed out two bonus spots for the Champions League to the best-ranked federations. Since these bonus spots have only been clinched by federations that already have four spots so far, the UCL race has been extended.

Italy (Serie A) and Germany (Bundesliga) were the first to get this bonus in the 2023-24 season, while England (Premier League) and Spain (La Liga) have clinched them since. In any case, as alluded to, getting such a bonus spot means there are five up for grabs for the next Champions League edition.

It's not certain that the Premier League clubs will get an extra spot to fight for in the 2026-27 season, but if they do well in European competitions (that's what it's based on), they will likely get it. That is, to be clear, one more team qualified for the 2027-28 edition of the Champions League.
