Barry Ferguson has been put in charge as the interim head coach until the end of the season. But, bookmakers are pricing up whether he will be a permanent replacement or just the interim manager.

How Long do Rangers Managers Last?

Clement has only been in charge at Rangers for just over a year, but there has been a lot of turnover in the club's dugout in recent years. Here is how recent predecessors at Ibrox got on:

  • Philippe Clement: October 2023-February 2025
  • Michael Beale: November 2022-October 2023
  • Giovanni van Bronckhorst: November 2021-November 2022
  • Steven Gerrard: June 2018-November 2021
  • Graeme Murty: October 2017-May 2018
  • Pedro Caixinha: March 2017-October 2017
  • Mark Warburton: June 2015-February 2017

Clement took charge of Rangers in October 2023 and quickly made an impression by securing the League Cup and briefly guiding the team to the top of the Scottish Premiership. However, struggles against Celtic, including a League Cup final loss on penalties, saw Rangers fall short in the title race and miss out on the Scottish Cup.

Inconsistent league form, a shock cup exit to Queen’s Park, and a home defeat to St Mirren left Rangers trailing 13 points behind their rivals. While his Europa League run was respectable, the domestic setbacks proved too costly, leading to his departure after 16 months.

Beale seemed to be a natural fit to take over at Ibrox as he had successfully served on Steven Gerrard's coaching staff. He won his first four games as manager and took home the league's manager of the month prize as a result, but then Rangers finished the season without a trophy. Beale was then sacked after Rangers lost three of their first seven games of the next term.

Just like Beale, Dutch boss Van Bronckhorst was only able to last about a year in charge of Rangers. He delivered the Scottish Cup and took Rangers to the final of the Europa League in his first campaign, but the ex-Rangers player was sacked with his side a long way behind Celtic in the title race and having suffered six defeats out of six in the Champions League group stage.

In recent years, Gerrard has been the most successful Rangers boss. The former England midfielder was in his first managerial post and the highlight of his spell was certainly an unbeaten league season, Rangers claiming the title with a whopping 102 points. Gerrard was popular but was tempted by the chance to take over at Premier League club Aston Villa.

Having earlier served as caretaker manager Murty appeared a natural fit when Rangers needed a new manager in 2017. But a lack of tactical acumen became clear and when Rangers were beaten 4-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final by rivals Celtic and then lost an Old Firm clash 5-0 in the league shortly afterwards, there was no way he could remain in charge and he was sacked.

Eyebrows were raised when Caixinha got the job and he struggled in the role despite getting off to a fine start when Rangers beat Hamilton Academical 4-0 in his first match in charge. Just a few weeks later, Rangers suffered a heavy home loss to Celtic and after they lost to Aberdeen at Ibrox for the first time in 26 years, they could only finish third in the league table.

Caixinha's side failed to qualify for Europe after losing to Luxembourg's FC Progrès Niederkorn and when he was sacked he became the shortest-serving manager in the history of the Glasgow club.

With Rangers in the Championship, they turned to Warburton and he led them to the Scottish Challenge Cup, as well as promotion to the top tier, in his first season. When Rangers lost to Celtic on New Year's Eve they were 19 points behind the leaders. Warburton left not long after.

Next Rangers Manager Candidates

Barry Ferguson is the current interim manager of Rangers and the bookmaker's favourite at the time of this analysis. But, how will he perform for the rest of the season and will it be good enough to extend his contract? If not, who else could be in the running?

  • Derek McInnes

McInnes spent five years at Rangers but was never more than a squad player. In his first job as a manager, McInness earned promotion to the Scottish Premier League for St Johnstone, then after a mixed spell at Bristol City south of the border he was handed the Aberdeen job.

There, McInnes won the 2014 Scottish League Cup Final when Aberdeen triumphed 4-2 on penalties - the Dons winning their first trophy for nearly 20 years - and qualified for Europe. He came close to delivering title glory for Aberdeen but a poor run of form saw him leave in 2021.

McInnes has since rebuilt his reputation at Kilmarnock, recording another promotion to the Scottish Premier League and then a fourth-placed finish. He would be among the favourites.

  • Kevin Muscat

Some fans have been calling for Muscat to get the job, with the former Australia international having had a brief spell at Ibrox back in his playing days.

Muscat led Melbourne Victory to an A-League premiership-championship double in his homeland in 2015, then he won the J1 League title in 2022 with Yokohama F. Marinos.

Curiously, at both clubs he had replaced Ange Postecoglou in the dugout. Muscat has won titles in three different countries after his Shanghai Port team claimed the 2024 Chinese Super League. Could he make that four at Rangers?

  • Steven Gerrard

While some Rangers fans cannot forgive Gerrard for the way he left Ibrox, many would welcome him back to Glasgow with open arms.

The Englishman has been unable to kick on since leaving Rangers, lasting less than a year at Villa.

He surprised many when he opted to become the new manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, where he is now contracted all the way to 2027.

Brendan Rodgers went back to Celtic, so could Gerrard do the same with their Old Firm rivals?

  • Jimmy Thelin

The Swedish coach Thelin is still relatively new to Scottish football, but has been earning rave reviews for his work since taking charge of Aberdeen in April 2024.

The Dons won 13 games in a row at the start of his reign but a 6-0 cup loss to Celtic shows he still has a lot of work to do.

  • Graham Potter

The Englishman remains out of work since his sacking at Chelsea but has recently spoken about being ready to return to the dugout after a lengthy break.

Potter has been linked with a range of jobs without getting one, but it is unclear whether or not Rangers would be appealing.

  • Rafa Benitez

Veteran manager Benitez is also unemployed after leaving Celta Vigo in March 2024. The Spaniard won a brace of La Liga titles with Valencia and took Liverpool to Champions League glory, later adding the Supercoppa Italiana and Club World Cup to his CV with Inter Milan.

Since leaving Newcastle United in 2019, Benitez has struggled to settle anywhere with both Everton and Celta struggling during his brief spells. Could he revive his career at Rangers?

  • Henrik Rydstrom

Malmo manager Rydstrom is an intriguing and exciting potential candidate, having won a brace of Allsvenskan league titles in Sweden.

Loyalty is clearly important to Rydstrom as he played well over 500 times for Kalmar in his playing days, so tempting him to Glasgow might be tricky.

  • Kjetil Knutsen

Another manager thriving in Scandinavian football, Knutsen took Bodø/Glimt to the club's first Norwegian national league title, which they successfully defended the following year.

Knutsen made headlines when his team battered Jose Mourinho's Roma 6-1 and he has been named the Eliteserien Coach of the Year on three occasions, taking the title in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

  • Steven Davis

Davis already had one spell in temporary charge of Rangers and could be an obvious man to step in should Clement leave. One of the classiest midfielders in Rangers' modern history, Davis would certainly have the fans on his side but there are question marks over whether he has the experience required to take on such a big role so early on in his coaching career.

The former Northern Ireland international is a big character, though, and had a taste of what it takes to lead Rangers when he was given a couple of games in charge before Clement's arrival, losing in the Europa League to Aris Limassol before recording a Scottish Premier League win against St Mirren.

Davis did not hold back in his criticism of Rangers after one of the poorest performances under Clement, but would he be able to solve the issues within the club?
