La Liga Relegation: 2025-26 Ante-Post Tips

With the top end of the table looked at, now we need to look at the bottom side of the division, and there are some interesting teams in the relegation picture, in my eyes.

Real Oviedo, having just come up from the second tier, are one of the favourites for relegation this season, and it is understandable why this is the case; after back-to-back attempts to leave the second tier, finally made it up for the first time since 2001.

Despite only being a few points off an automatic place, there are immediate doubts about their ability to take to the top flight this season. With a few million invested, they have certainly tried to make a step towards safety. However, the success of it remains to be seen.

Espanyol, then, stands out as another candidate for the drop. Joan Garcia's exit to fellow Catalan side Barcelona is one of the bigger moves from the division this summer. However, they have not really reinvested the exit money.

Instead, less than £5 million has been put into the squad, which does not inspire much hope for their safety. Last season, they flirted with the relegation picture, and it would not be a surprise if they did again this year.

Finally, I am torn between Elche and Levante. Both were promoted from the second tier last season, but I feel like Levante may just not have enough to stay up. Investment has not been up to the standard to stay up, and I have my doubts about their ability.

How Relegation Works in La Liga

Just like most of the other top five leagues in Europe, such as the Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A, the bottom three teams at the end of the season are immediately relegated from La Liga. With it being a 20-team league, this means that the teams in positions 18, 19 and 20 are in the relegation zone. In the past, we have seen some pretty close battles on this front.

The 2024/25 season was another example of that, as just two points separated Leganes in 18th place and Getafe in 13th. The classic club Sevilla finished just one point ahead of the team, struggling big time after another disappointing season.
