La Liga season preview 2024-25

La Liga is returning to its former self and although it might be a stretch to call it a title battle between two teams, there are some interesting candidates to discuss in this preview.

These days, the Spanish top division hosts some of the most entertaining players in world football, with Kylian Mbappe now on the scene as well. This season will hopefully be another demonstration of high quality, and perhaps we can see a similar underdog story as Girona showed in the 2023/24 season.

So let's stop stalling and get into the preview, starting with the candidates in the title race.

Which Teams Are in La Liga?

  • Athletic Club Bilbao
  • Atletico de Madrid
  • CA Osasuna
  • CD Leganes
  • Deportivo Alaves
  • FC Barcelona
  • Getafe CF
  • Girona FC
  • Rayo Vallecano
  • RC Celta
  • RDC Espanyol de Barcelona
  • RCD Mallorca
  • Real Betis
  • Real Madrid
  • Real Sociedad
  • Real Valladolid CF
  • Sevilla FC
  • UD Las Palmas
  • Valencia CF
  • Villarreal CF

Who Will Win the La Liga Title?

It could be argued that La Liga is reverting to its former days. Long gone are the days when the title could be between three teams for the title, at least in the eyes of the bookies, who think it will be a landslide this season.

That landslide is in favour of the current European and La Liga champions Real Madrid. Los Blancos recorded a 2-0 win in the European Super Cup, and it seems they could be in for another fantastic season, especially with Kylian Mbappe at the helm.

The Frenchman got himself off the mark in the debut game - which we tipped in our preview - and he will surely have a good season in Spain. After all, he is probably the best player in world football. However, he is not the only new Galactico, there is also Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and several others.

Led by Carlo Ancelotti, it is very difficult to look past him and his side, and that is why the bookies are pricing them at such a low price, and we can't say that we blame them.

It then feels rather obvious to state this, but the only teams that we think could compete with Los Blancos are Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. The Blaugrana are a mess of a club, and whilst their team is exciting, they are riddled with off-the-pitch issues, which makes it difficult to back them confidently.

However, Atletico could provide a nice price, and so we're taking note of them. Given Real are rightfully the strong favourites, we'll expand on Diego Simeone's side in the next section, but they could offer us a nice each-way price.

Best Bets for La Liga Title

At the time of this post, Real Madrid are the bookies' favourites to win the La Liga title, with odds of 4/9 in most places. Barcelona follow after at odds of 7/2.

Who Will Finish in the La Liga Top 4?

Following the trend with how we looked at the Premier League, given there are no promotions, we're taking a look at a top-four finish, and there are some nice odds available.

We floated over Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and we have already gone into enough detail about Real - who are unsurprisingly at a tiny price for a top-four finish - so let's take a deeper dive into the other two teams, and look at who else could stake a claim for Champions League football.

As previously touched upon, Barca have too many issues around the club for me to see them as a genuine title contender, and so I think the top four is where they'll finish. However, whether they'll be in the title battle picture or the top four picture remains to be seen. Hansi Flick is a nice coach, and to be fair, adding Dani Olmo is nice, but with the Blaugrana, there's always an issue around the corner...

Elsewhere, I really like Atletico Madrid, and I think they are a better shout for the title than Barca. They have recruited fantastically, adding Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth and Robin Le Normand to an already good squad.

In addition to these players, Samu Omorodion and Joao Felix have returned, and whilst they have lost Alvaro Morata, Memphis Depay and Mario Hermoso, they are undergoing a massive rebuild, and you can argue that the outgoings have been fantastically replaced.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad are the next two favourites to take a place in the top four. I'm not sure if Girona will be able to maintain their position from last year after losing Savio and Artem Dovbyk.

Bilbao and Sociedad have stars, such as and they both have strong chances of pushing into the top four after finishing just outside these places last season.

Who Will Be Relegated From La Liga?

The La Liga relegation battle seems quite strange to call, and there are four teams who we think could really struggle at the bottom end of the table in the upcoming season.

I don't think we can highlight a dead certain, but if we had to pick one team that is more destined for the drop than the others, we'd have to pick Leganes. Last season was their first back in the top half of the Segunda Division, and it ended with them winning the League, but whether they have enough to maintain a position in La Liga is difficult to call.

You can then make similar arguments for the other two promoted sides - Valladolid and Espanyol. Looking through both teams, you once again have to ask if they have enough quality to make the step up into the top flight, and with both, you'd have to lean more towards saying no.

Aside from the three promoted teams, you then have to look at Las Palmas, who are entering their second consecutive La Liga campaign since promotion in the 2022/23 season, and it could be their last. Once again, it is a question of quality, and after a dismal ending to the 2023/24 campaign, they could be in real trouble this season.

La Liga Relegation Odds & Tips

At the time of writing, Leganes are the bookies' favourite to be relegated from La Liga this season, with some bookies offering prices of 11/8 for them to face the drop.
