Last season's Ligue 1 was quite close at the bottom end of the table. Between Paris Saint-Germain and fifth-placed Nice, there was a 21-point gap, but that same gap also existed between eighth and last-placed Clermont Foot.

Only 14 points separated the 13th and 18th placed teams in the division and this season another close battle could occur. Indeed, it looks like there are five real contenders at risk of being relegated, so let's dive into it.

Of the three promoted sides from Ligue 2 last season, you could argue that Angers (5/4) have the best chance of avoiding the drop. Although they have not had much money to recruit, they have made some nice additions and whilst they will be in the relegation picture, I think they could stay up.

I have doubts about Saint-Etienne (11/8) and Auxerre (7/2). Starting with Les Verts, they are returning to the top flight after a 2-year hiatus, but whether they can progress much after winning the relegation play-off remains to be seen. Auxerre won the league last season and had a fantastic attacking record, but I have doubts about whether they will be able to translate that to the top division.

Le Havre (9/4) were the favourites for the drop in the 2023/24 season but stayed up by the skin of their teeth. Unfortunately for them, I think they will succumb to the drop this season, and they could be joined by Nantes (10/3), who have been mainstays in the bottom half of the division in recent years.

How Relegation Works in Ligue 1

Just like the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 is a league that consists of 18 teams rather than 20, with the latter being the standard among Europe's top leagues. As a result, the bottom two teams are relegated at the end of every season, while the third team must take part in a play-off tie. This is played over two legs against the play-off winner in Ligue 2.

Metz finished third from the bottom in the 2023/24 season on the same amount of points as Lorient, though with a better head-to-head away goals scored record (!). It wasn't enough in the end, though, as St. Etienne won the play-off game and thus secured their spot in the top flight for the current season.
