Compare the latest odds for the next permanent Sheffield Wednesday manager after Danny Rohl.
Sheffield Wednesday’s managerial history is a mixed bag in terms of how creative their appointments have been. Their last two hires – Xisco Munoz and Rohl – have been more left-field hires whilst their first foray outside of a British manager only came inside the last decade.
With one of those hires working out splendidly and one failing miserably, it is difficult to know what approach the hierarchy will take next time, which is only further thrown into doubt with question marks over the future of the club.
With Wednesday fans having enjoyed their journey under Danny Rohl it is perhaps only natural they want to keep that momentum rolling even if the main man leaves.
That's exactly why Chris Powell is heavily fancied by a big chunk of the Owls fan base. The key here being that Powell has been part of the coaching set up since Rohl was appointed.
The transition from coach to Head Coach doesn't always work in football but Powell could certainly put together a strong CV.
Not only has he enjoyed a strong coaching journey having worked at clubs like Tottenham and Leicester but also within the England setup. In addition to that, Powell also boasts experience as a number one.
His success as a manager has varied but, at his peak, he led Charlton to promotion from League One to the Championship with a 101 point haul. Ironically, Powell's side finished eight points clear of second placed Sheffield Wednesday that season.
With the club in a fairly unstable position where ownership is concerned, this could be seen as a cheap but reasonably safe option.
Rob Edwards has endured a miserable 2024/25 campaign that ultimately saw his head roll from Kenilworth Road but, make no mistake, his name will feature heavily for a lot of Championship clubs where a managerial vacancy is concerned, such was the job he did with Luton. You could see Wednesday being a good fit for him too.
Edwards' headline achievement is clearly guiding an unfancied Luton side to promotion to the Premier League. Once there though, his side put up a battling attempt to stay in the top flight, which isn't celebrating failure but more an acknowledgement of Edwards proving an ability to extract everything out of a squad.
The other factor to consider is how Edwards conducted himself during some difficult times, on and off the pitch. Again, this will be something that appeals to boardrooms and playing squads alike.
Edwards can point to past success at other clubs too with a league title under his belt when manager at Forest Green in League Two whilst, further back, he enjoyed success with Wolves' under 23 side. With a good reputation in the game and a decent record at a couple of clubs, his appointment would likely be a solid one, if perhaps unspectacular.
If Powell and Edwards hit the more traditional route of managerial appointments, a move for someone like David Wagner might be a step towards the more creative hire.
Wagner, who holds American-German citizenship, has a track record of managing overseas with jobs in Germany and Switzerland but also brings an experience of the English game with him too having previously enjoyed successes with Huddersfield and, to a lesser extent, Norwich.
His main acclaim came with the Terriers. Wagner guided them to play-off glory in the Championship and then kept them up the following season. A break away from England followed before he returned to these shores with the Canaries.
Over an 18-month period, Wagner held a respectable 41% win ratio and steered Norwich to a play-off finish in his one full season at the club.
Sacked by Norwich after that play-off semi-final defeat, Wagner has been out of work since and could be seen as a steady appointment for a club in Sheffield Wednesday’s position.
