Latest League Two Odds: Three in Fine Form

Another weekend of League Two action has been and gone, so we can now look at the market and how it's reacted to what we saw on Matchday Seven.

Barnet Lead League Two

We start at the top again this week, with Barnet the favourites to win the League Two title this season, and rightly so, as they sit top of the table. It's rare that League Two sees this...

Indeed, we often see well-thought-of teams sitting at the top, even if results are pointing in favour of them winning the league. For Barnet, though, strong results keep coming and this weekend was only the latest example of that.

A 3-1 win against Fleetwood is solid and it keeps them moving in one direction: up. They're comfortably the favourites for the title right now at 9/2 with the best football bookmakers.

Lee Grant Back to League One?

After underwhelming with Huddersfield Town, Grant has started strongly in League Two with Walsall, winning three of his first seven games and drawing the others and their most recent win came against Port Vale.

The Saddlers are no stranger to an early title push - having started recent campaigns in similar fashion - Grant will need to keep this up; others before him haven't been able to. If they do, the 18/1 for them to win the title will shorten significantly.

It maybe shouldn't be a surprise that he is in the running to be the new Preston North End boss, but whether he'd abandon his post at Walsall this early is certainly a question to be asked.

Grimsby Aiming to Right Wrongs

Like Walsall, Grimsby have come close to promotion in recent seasons but fallen short towards the end of the season. However, they've set out with a clear goal this season - to not replicate those showings and so far, they're not.

After last weekend's win against Bristol Rovers, they grabbed another three points this weekend against Crawley - who they should've beaten - keeping them unbeaten thus far.

You can maybe say that there are too many draws right now, but they're not really alone in that category. If they tighten up at the back just a tad, they could well be a major threat for the title this season and 8/1 with three E/W places is nice enough.

Salford Hitting Form

Salford were the summer's pick for the League Two title winner - and they still could achieve that feat - but right now they've got to think about getting back into the play-offs. A torrid start to the season means they're playing catch-up, and it's somewhat reminiscent of MK Dons last season.

Having picked up 10 points from their last 12 available, though, it seems like they're starting to hit a bit of form.

This weekend's win against Swindon was nothing to rave about really; a case of getting the job done. However, it's undeniable that they're moving in the right direction after an abysmal start. If they keep up this form, they'll be back in the title debate very soon, if not the automatic promotion discussion.

Up and Down for York

York are a really weird one this season. Coming up from the National League is always a bit hit and miss, but it's fair to say that they've started the season well. I do fear that their form is a little too patchy, though.

They've taken seven points from their last 15 available and their loss to Chesterfield this weekend is something of an issue. After all, they're a fellow play-off contender. Yet, I'd not be majorly worried about them, given they're still adapting to the division.

If after 20/25 games they're still patchy, it could be problematic, but they look solid enough for a Top Seven spot currently.

Gillingham Thriving as Bristol Rovers Lose Again

Gillingham are becoming the surprise package of the division and this weekend's win against a well-backed-for-promotion Bristol Rovers side was the latest fantastic result and it wasn't a smash and grab. Instead, it was a battering.

Three goals all in the second half, Gillingham were fantastic and massively deserved their points, which keeps them unbeaten in League Two. It's a statement result and it appears the bookmakers aren't convinced about them yet. BetVictor are still offering 13/8 for them to finish in the top half, whilst others are offering around 6/1 for them to be in the play-offs this season.

Rovers, on the other hand, have now lost two on the bounce against teams around the play-off picture. They're only three points off the top of the table, so it's not the end of the world. However, they need to turn things around quickly.

They're still 4/9 for a Top Seven spot; that should still be a given.

General Picture

Because of how many teams are fighting for a top seven spot, it's difficult to go through all of them. However, I wanted to give a few mentions elsewhere.

Cheltenham's form also continued this weekend with a draw, meaning they've not lost in their last five games, taking 10 points from these games. Bet365 and some of the other top betting apps have them at 4/1 for a play-off spot. So, they must be kept under close watch.

Similar could be said for Crewe, who are just drawing too much at the moment. After winning their first two, they've drawn each of their last five. So, they must start nicking a few extra points here and there. If they do, the 5/2 for them to get a play-off spot will disappear.

Crawley Sink to the Bottom

Before the start of the season, I was quite vocal with my worries about Crawley. After all, their summer recruitment was a little ropey and that raised concerns about whether they could take a step forward after last season's campaign.

So far, they've only regressed and this weekend's result further proved as much. Although they played a very good Grimsby side, they have now lost four of their last five and look desperate already.

Betway still have them at 2/1 to go down; I wonder how much longer that'll last.

Poor Vale

After relegation to the fourth division, Port Vale should've had a chance to reset a little. Yet, they've just continued their struggles and relegation looks possible again. Four defeats in seven games is worrying and there aren't even any signs of that changing.

This weekend's defeat to Walsall was a chance to fire up the fanbase with a derby win. Instead, it's another defeat and another sign that they may need to be worried about the season...

You can still get 14/1 for them to go down; it may be worth considering that price...

General Picture

There are several teams that could slip and slide into the relegation zone this season, so it's impossible to cover each individually. So, here's a brief run-through.

Newport County are picking up points, but they cannot keep drawing all season. They've taken three points from their last 15 available and it's a worry. With their only win coming against a poor Rochdale side, we need to see something more from them.

Similar could be said for Exeter City, too. They're drawing games too often and whilst they've taken points off Walsall and Barnet, they've also dropped points against Port Vale and Tranmere. It's another team to keep an eye on, especially with them being 11/2 for the drop.
