Latest League Two Odds: Tight at the Top (Again)

Another weekend of League Two action has been and gone, so we can now look at the market and how it's reacted to what we saw on Matchday Six.

Let's dive in!

Barnet Take the Lead

After another mad weekend in League Two, we saw a new team take the lead in the title race. Of course, that was Barnet - who also delivered us a winning tip - with their victory against Accrington Stanley.

A pretty run-of-the-mill result against a team towards the bottom end of the table, the Bees grabbed three points after coming back from a goal down and they certainly look like the best team in the league currently.

Their lead at the top of the league is far from dominant. However, three wins and three draws from six games is as good a start as you'll see in League Two, barring anything exceptional. A few of the best football bookies have them as favourites, but they're backable at 5/1 in most places.

Bristol Rovers Still the Bookies' Preference

The reason why Barnet aren't the favourites yet is Bristol Rovers, even despite their loss at the weekend. However, there can't be too many worries taken from a 2-0 defeat to Grimsby away from home.

Two first-half goals and a second-half red card summed up the game perfectly, as Rovers were clearly frustrated. Nevertheless, the bookies still see them as the favourites to win the league. Some 5/1 is available, but most have them at 9/2 if not shorter.

York Emerge at the Top

Finally, we come to York City, who are impressing heavily after their promotion from the National League last season. It's been a trend recently - teams challenging instantly after their promotion to League Two - so it's no shock that York are up there already.

They've taken 11 points from their first six games in League Two, with their win against Swindon firing them into the automatic promotion spots this weekend. If anything, calling it a win feels slightly nice. It was a thrashing.

Four goals, three points, and back to winning ways? Sounds like a good weekend for those in York!

Screamer Sees Grimsby Beat Title Favourites

We've already addressed Grimsby's win against Bristol Rovers, but we'll do so again here. In fact, the goal deserves a section speaking about it - I rarely say to watch goals back in these reviews, but trust me, this one's worth it.

A tremendously satisfying moment and another three points in the bag, Grimsby are again putting up a fight for a Top Three spot at least.

This could be a big win looking back on it, but they need to put some winning form together; draws don't get you promoted over the course of a season.

Walsall Underwhelm (Again)

Walsall started the League Two season as we've seen them do on a few occasions: with a few impressive results. Now, they're settling into that mediocre rhythm. They've drawn three on the bounce and drawn four of their last five.

It's not season-ending, far from that.

However, they drew against Rochdale - who sit bottom of the league - and didn't threaten again. They need to start picking up wins again; if they don't, they'll be out of the promotion race quickly this season...

Cheltenham Galloping On

Finally, we come to the shock team of the promotion race: Cheltenham. Expected to be among the teams fighting at the bottom of the division, they currently sit level on points with Grimsby on 11 - a thoroughly impressive haul so far.

They've won two of their last three games - against York and Crawley, this weekend - and are putting together a serious challenge at the top end of the league. If they can keep this up, they'll cause a few shocks this season.

General Picture

Because of how many teams are fighting for a top seven spot, it's difficult to go through all of them. However, I wanted to give a few mentions elsewhere.

Fleetwood drew again this weekend and are in the Walsall category, with four draws in their last five games. Unfortunately, it feels like many of the competitors at the top of the league are draw-heavy currently, so that must change. 3/1 for a Top Seven spot isn't awful, but they need a bit more conviction.

Crewe - sorry, I sound like a broken record - also enter this category, drawing their last four games in a row. They've had tough fixtures, though, so they could bounce back in the near future. In fairness, their price of 2/1 for a Top Seven spot does look pretty attractive.

Looking a bit further down, Gillingham also deserve a mention. They've won their past two, drawing all five games before that, and they're potentially being overlooked in the odds at 6/1 for a play-off spot...

Rochdale Draw... But

Rochdale's return to League Two has not gone as they'd have hoped so far. They've struggled massively and sit rooted to the bottom of the table already and that may not change as we go further into the season.

A draw against Walsall isn't a bad result, but when you consider their only win of the season came against a Shrewsbury side who were also expected to go down... you start having worries for them. The bookies are too, with them dropping to 4/1 to be relegated.

Crawley Drop Into the Bottom Two

Crawley were one of my worries for this season and so far, they're proving me right. They've lost three of their last four games and a 3-1 defeat to Cheltenham wouldn't exactly breed confidence for the season ahead...

The summer recruits need to start showing more; if they don't, it could be a very bleak season for Crawley, you feel.

General Picture

I remain worried about Newport County, too, who sit outside the bottom two by a point. After their opening day win, they've not picked up a point since and two draws from their last five don't really take them out of the conversation.

Alongside Crawley Town, they're the favourites to go down to the National League this season (at 2/1) and it's not looking unreasonable right now. They're in danger, yet again.
