Latest League Two Odds: Title Favourites Shock For Wrong Reasons

The second weekend of the 2026/27 League Two season has officially been and gone, so we can now look at the market and how it's reacted to what we saw on Matchday 2.

Let's dive in!

Salford Falling Behind Already

In the summer, it seemed fairly likely that Salford would win the league. However, they're looking more like a relegation side than anything else at this moment. After an opening day defeat, they needed to bounce back.

Instead, they have taken another defeat and they are already falling behind the promotion chasers.

Barnet and now Chesterfield aren't easy games to open with, but the expectation was that they were going to dominate. They're doing anything but that. It's no surprise that they're no longer the favourites.

Flawless Barnet Win Again

After a big win against Salford, Barnet had a lot of positives coming into the second game of the season. So a win against relegation candidates Shrewsbury was expected - as I tipped for this weekend.

Thankfully for the tips and them, they managed to get three points, scoring as many goals.

It means they've got six points from six available so far and they lead the division, with a positive four goal difference already. So, it's not a shock that they lead the odds, too, at 11/2 with most of the best football bookmakers.

Crewe-sing at the Top

There is another team with a perfect record too and we cannot overlook them. Indeed, Crewe are cruising and they might not be doing it in style, but they're efficient and that matters.

Another 1-0 win - this time against Northampton - keeps them in second and they're already looking pretty solid, but it seems the market has not caught up with them.

Despite their record, they are still available to win the league at 33/1 with AK Bets, which seems like way too high of a price so far. Even for a Top Seven spot they're at 9/4...

Grimsby Earn Valuable Point

After winning their first game of the season, Grimsby had hoped to add another W to their record against Walsall. However, the duo played out a bore draw in the Midlands.

There's very little that can be said in a game without goals. Yet, it may be a pretty good point. Under Lee Grant, the Saddlers have looked pretty solid and they have that weird first-half of the season boost.

So, it may be a strong result to look back on in a few months. Either way, the unbeaten record still suits and they're more than in the race for promotion.

York Will Take a Point in Yorkshire

Being promoted to League Two was huge for York, but it certainly wasn't the final step in their journey up the leagues. A win on the first matchday of the season proved as much, but a draw this time around hasn't and won't diminish spirits.

Facing a Rotherham side - who are a bit of an unknown quantity - they earned a solid point away from home and you'd struggle to find someone who'd be too disappointed with this result.

Going to one of the more established sides in the division and taking a point is a great result in your first season.

Bristol Rovers Back to Winning Ways

Before the start of the season, Bristol Rovers were another of the heavily backed sides, but they haven't really shown too much so far. An opening day defeat to York wasn't awful, but wasn't great.

Now, whilst they scored five goals, beating Newport 5-3 is not a good result in my books. Conceding six goals in two games is a problem and teams will expose a poor defence if given a chance.

4/5 for a Top Seven spot is available and I'd be looking at them in this bracket for now, rather than in a title setting...

General Picture

Because of how many teams there are fighting for a top seven spot, it's difficult to go through all of them. However, I wanted to give a few mentions elsewhere.

After their defeat on the first weekend, Chesterfield winning against Salford shows that they are still very much in the conversation at the top end of the division.

Additionally, Colchester have had an interesting start, beating a good Oldham side this weekend 2-1. Available at around 3/1, they have four points from their two opening games and could be worth keeping an eye on.

Shrewsbury Already Struggling

At the bottom, Shrewsbury already look pretty damned. They won't be the only side to lose to Barnet this season, but they just didn't put up anything of a fight against them.

A seemingly easy three points conceded and it could very well become a common theme this season. Around the 3/1 mark for the drop, I can only see them shortening in price...

Rochdale Heading for Return?

In recent years, the trend has been National League teams going on to improve in League Two. However, it may not be the case for Rochdale, who have struggled massively in the fourth division.

Like Shrewsbury, they've conceded five goals in two games and a 2-1 defeat to Crawley - who could be threatened with relegation themselves this season - doesn't help after a 3-0 defeat to Newport.

I'd fear for them, but Sky Bet and its sister sites have them priced at 13/2 for the drop... maybe it's worth taking some of that price.

General Picture

Looking away from the bottom two, I'd not have high hopes for Newport County this season. Their win against Rochdale could be huge later in the year. However, conceding five to the Gas is somewhat of a problem.

They're fine scoring goals, but if they're overly leaky at the back, it'll matter very little.

As it stands, Accrington Stanley are the joint favourites for the drop at 5/2 - showing how tight the division is, with there being no runaway favourites - nevertheless, there may be others better suited to this position...

A loss and a defeat isn't a terrible start, but the fact that they were beaten 2-0 by Exeter has certainly left a few worried. I'd not be rushing to back them at the price, though. I think there are worse teams at better prices...
