Matchday 25 of the League One season saw few changes in the table. However, there are definitely some interesting results to speak about, and the promotion battle is intriguing.
At the start of these odds watches, there were a couple of teams involved in this section. We could now just call this the Birmingham section and be done with it.
The Blues are well and truly fulfilling expectations right now, and with another dominant victory, they extended their lead at the top of League One to two points. However, the side have two games in hand on second-placed Wycombe, meaning an eight-point gap is very possible and probable.
Of course, Chris Davies' side could not take their chances to further extend their lead at the top of the division, but that's quite unlikely so this section is staying firmly dedicated to the Bluenoses for the time being.
The logical place to start here is Wycombe, given they still sit second in the league despite a draw at the weekend and a loss on Tuesday night in their game in hand (but more on that in a moment).
I am quite worried about Matt Bloomfield's side considering the Chairboys have lost a few key players already, and there is a chance for more to depart in this window. If they are not replaced perfectly, a drop-off is impending I fear.
If there is going to be anyone challenging for the title (which I don't think there will be), it would be Huddersfield Town. The Terriers are 15 unbeaten currently, with their last loss coming against, you guessed it, Birmingham.
With a win against Wycombe after Matchday 25 (due to an original postponement), the Terriers now sit just four points behind second place with a game in hand (Wigan away). Reinforcements are expected in January, I think there could be value in the Terriers, perhaps as an E/W shout for the title (making the most of places) over a promotion bet. The latter certainly offers more safety though.
Wrexham sit in third, but fourth in the odds, and to be fair I think this is probably right. It is fair to suggest that they are probably doing better than most imagined, and the Welsh outfit will probably only get better as the season continues. Additions in January are possible, so a further strengthened side will only continue to see themselves involved in the promotion picture.
Barnsley are having a great time of things at the moment too, so their position must be looked at. Tarn have won their last four games and have created a four-point bumper between themselves and seventh place.
Bolton and Reading are probably the only two teams that I'm really looking at in the odds, but not with much faith in complete honesty. I feel there are better sides in the picture, and right now, the odds are not tempting enough to get involved as there are problems with both teams.
Below, we have collected the top four teams and their respective odds to win promotion in the 2024/25 League One season.
Things are quite grim at the bottom of League One, that is for sure. None of the bottom four won at the weekend and there is a greater gap forming, which is rather problematic.
Burton are already being condemned by the bookies and I'm further jumping on the bandwagon. With two draws in their past five and three losses - the latest coming this weekend against Northampton Town, who have extended their gap away from the bottom four with the victory - it is really worrying, and I can only see it worsening.
Five games, five defeats paints a brutal picture for Cambridge United. Like Burton, they succumbed to a side just outside of the relegation zone, which has not done them any favours, and I cannot see anything changing with them conceding 12 in their last five. Woeful.
It is a similar story for Shrewsbury, but not as bleak. A loss at the weekend was their first since the 14th of December, but a lack of wins has put them into a perilous position, and I cannot say I hold much hope for things to differ.
I wish I could say Crawley gave me hope, but it would be a blatant lie. Despite having two games in hand, I cannot see anything changing for the side, and with no wins in their last five, it does not seem like things are going to get any better.
A five-point gap currently separates 21st and 20th, and despite the teams above them being quite poor, I don't see anyone in major danger of falling into that group...
