A game decided at the death of the regular season, Chesterfield will now host Walsall in the first leg of this League Two play-off game. There is a lot to get into, so here we go.
Below, you can find Ben's bets for Chesterfield v Walsall in the League Two play-offs. The odds were correct at the time of writing.
At the time of writing this, the lineups were not available to us, so I have tried to make some assumptions about the lineup, whilst only tipping players I think will start. It is worth stating here that I would not advise placing any bets until the lineups are out for both teams.
Play-off games are so difficult to call, so there is still a higher level of risk with each selection. However, I've ran through the trends from the season and feel rather confident with our choices here.
So, without further ado, let's dive into my reasoning.
I think this is quite an easy start here, and the price is generous enough for it to still have some value in my eyes at 4/5 - just touching the evens mark even on some sites perhaps.
These two have scored in 75%+ of their games this year, something which only increases for Chesterfield who have scored in 91% of their home games this season - which is the best tally in the league. Whilst Walsall have only scored in 65% of their away games, I still feel quite comfortable with this pick here.
Furthermore, this has landed in both of the games this season, which shows that the teams are certainly vulnerable to one another.
Picking the both teams to be carded market is always a bit of a risk, especially when you're looking for two cards each, rather than just four in the game, for example. However, the trends suggest that we should be good here.
In the game at Walsall, this landed, and whilst there were no cards in the October fixture, there were still 16 fouls in the game, so this can be discounted a little.
Additionally, the duo both average around two cards a game generally and in these circumstances, with Chesterfield at home and Walsall away, it looks like a strong choice here.
Finally, we're going to go for a draw again in this game - something which I also predicted for the other League Two play-off game. The difference between the teams is bigger, however, I think we are still looking at some potential value here.
Both games this season were quite close, and although Walsall won one game 3-1, it was a 101st-minute goal, and barring that, the game was difficult to actually pick a winner from. Then, in the reverse, a draw actually landed.
Walsall have drawn six of their past 10 games, with three of the other four games only having a one-goal difference in them, so I think that a draw here is somewhat of a safe prediction.
I'd argue that this is the more intriguing of the two League Two play-offs simply for form reasons, and what could be.
This is a game between two sides who are the polar opposite, at least in terms of mentalities around the club at present - you've got a Walsall side who have been dismal for a few months, against a Chesterfield team who have been superb recently.
Starting with the hosts, the Spireites were promoted to League Two last season, and like a few teams have done before them, are now looking to make the league straight into League One in their first year.
It is a prediction which has looked a bit hit and miss through the year, with the side facing some huge issues around the Christmas period. However, since the middle of April, they have been superb and are fully deserving of a spot in the play-offs.
Then, Walsall are a completely different tale. Until the January transfer window, the Saddlers were well on track to win the league comfortably. However, a few departures massively derailed their year, and they have somehow been made to settle for the playoffs.
On the final day, it seemed like they might have just clinched an automatic promotion place, however, a late goal from Bradford meant the Midlands club have had to settle for a chance to get to Wembley.
Predicted Chesterfield XI to face Walsall (4-3-3): Boot; Mandeville, Palmer, McFadzean, Gordon; Naylor, Fleck, Metcalfe; Olakigbe, Colclough, Grigg
Predicted Walsall XI to face Chesterfield (3-4-1-2): Simkin; Okagbue, Williams, Allen; Gordon, Chang, Stirk, Asiimwe; Hall; Amantchi, Jellis
