How Has Le Bris started at the Stadium of Light?

Despite a lot of football fans not being aware of Le Bris at the time of his appointment, he has quickly become a fan favourite among Sunderland supporters after making a flying start.

Le Bris had led Lorient to a top-half Ligue 1 finish but they were relegated in the following season, so it was something of a surprise to see him plucked for the Sunderland vacancy.

Going into October, Sunderland sat at the top of the Championship table after racking up a string of terrific results including a particularly eye-catching 1-0 home defeat of Burnley.

That win quietened any doubters but Sunderland have found it harder to collect results on the road, slipping to a 3-2 loss at Plymouth Argyle and a 2-1 defeat away to a tough Watford side.

Considering the difficulties Sunderland had during the summer transfer window, with star man Jack Clarke sold to Ipswich Town and few notable signings made, Le Bris is doing a fine job.

But Sunderland fans have a reputation for turning on managers and it is not impossible to see a situation whereby pressure begins to grow on the Frenchman as soon as bad results happen.

If that happens, many fans will be browsing the next Sunderland manager odds to see who is being linked with the job. Here are some of the names that are very likely to be in the frame:

  • Will Still

Still was heavily linked with Sunderland before Le Bris was instead appointed. With the owner of Sunderland, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, having a French background it is understandable that they look across the Channel. Belgian-born Englishman Still has developed a reputation as one of the most exciting young coaches on the continent, having done fine work in Ligue 1 with Reims.

Moving to Lens in the summer of 2024 means Still might be settled in France for now, but rumours linking him with a first position in English football are sure to continue to develop.

  • Frank Lampard

Former Derby County boss Lampard has been out of the game a while since his second spell at Chelsea ended in disarray, but he would surely be keen on a chance to take over at Sunderland.

Lampard's reputation is mostly built on that single successful season with the Rams, which saw a battalion of loan stars help them to reach the final of the Championship play-offs. They were edged out by Aston Villa, though, and Lampard has been left on the sidelines for a long period.

The ex-England midfielder might instead see his future in punditry with plenty of good TV work around, but being offered a chance by a club as big as Sunderland would be sure to appeal.

  • Didier Digard

Digard was appointed by Le Havre earlier in 2024, with the Frenchman having been listed among the favourites in the next Sunderland manager betting odds before Le Bris got the job.

Previously a player for neighbours Middlesbrough, Digard played for clubs including Real Betis and Paris Saint-Germain before starting his coaching career in Ligue 1 with Nice. It seems likely he will stay in that league with Le Havre for now, but English football may soon beckon again.

  • Liam Rosenior

Many fans of Championship clubs were surprised to see Hull City opt not to renew Rosenior's contract at the end of the 2023-24 season, with the club's board deciding he was not the man to bring the attacking football craved on Humberside. Rosenior was subsequently on the shortlist for a handful of second-tier jobs - he was said to be on the shortlist for the Burnley job after the shock departure of Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich - with Sunderland also keen on him.

The son of ex-Football League boss Leroy, Liam instead chose to move across the English Channel by taking up the post at Strasbourg and his early work at the club, including a home win over Roberto de Zerbi's fancied Marseille side, shows he is building a fine reputation.

  • Mike Dodds

Having already taken charge of Sunderland twice on an interim basis, it is not impossible to see Dodds being given a third chance to sit in the hot seat. Fans were unimpressed with Dodds' tactics during his second spell in the closing weeks of the 2023-24 season, though, and would be unlikely to welcome his appointment on a more permanent basis. The Black Cats had finished a lowly 16th in the league under Dodds having won one of their last eight matches.

But few know the inner workings of the north-east side as well as Dodds and he would be the obvious caretaker choice should Le Bris need to be replaced at short notice any time soon.
