Leeds United Next Manager: Is Daniel Farke a Dead Man Walking?

Harsh as it sounds, Daniel Farke is reportedly facing an uphill battle to save his job. “Leeds are falling apart again” is the song that neutral fans love to sing and should Leeds fail to secure promotion this season, his departure from Elland Road feels inevitable.

Some chatter suggests the club might pull the trigger even if Farke and co manage to get the job done with the suggestion that Farke isn’t Premier League level.

By any normal measure, Daniel Farke’s record at Leeds is ridiculous but, put yourself in the cutthroat business of elite level football in 2025 and you can start to make an argument why he could be out of a job come the summer.

Ultimately, even if Leeds get promoted, the only experience Farke has of England’s top flight is bad ones with a record of 49 games managed and just six wins whilst changes at the top of the club hierarchy probably don’t strengthen his case either. If Farke does leave, who could be the next Leeds United manager?

Next Leeds United Manager Candidates – Does a Big Name Await?

With question marks over what league the club will be in next season, assessing the Leeds United next manager market is very difficult but it is something the hierarchy at Elland Road could well be considering right now. Here are some names that are likely to be linked with the vacancy.

  • Steve Cooper

If you were sat in a boardroom unsure of whether you would be a Championship or Premier League side next season then Steve Cooper is a name that could quite easily rear it’s head to cover off both possibilities.

Cooper has a track record of performing well in the Championship having guided Swansea to two playoff finishes before then taking Nottingham Forest to promotion. What’s more impressive on Cooper’s resume though is the fact he – or more to the point, the club – butchered that squad before guiding Forest to safety.

Admittedly, what has followed for Cooper since then is a sacking from the City Ground followed by a short-lived spell at Leicester, who actually appointed Cooper after winning promotion from the Championship.

The key thing to note there being that Leicester were not in the relegation zone at the time of his dismissal with their season spiralling after he left.

  • Marco Rose

Marco Rose has been widely linked with a move to Rangers, who have a managerial vacancy at present. The critical link there being that the 49ers Enterprises, who also own Leeds, are said to want to buy Rangers and hire the former Leipzig manager in what is being described as an ‘ambitious’ move.

If Rose is admired by the Leeds ownership group and a move to Rangers looks to be a stretching one, is it impossible that he ends up filling a job at Elland Road?

Rose might have been relieved of his duties at Leipzig recently but he’s done a sensational job in Germany putting up a 56% win ratio from 128 games whilst guiding them to the 2022/23 Pokal.

Even this season, Rose had Leipzig on track for European qualification whilst he also saw them to the Pokal semi-final. With Rose’s style of play also brought into consideration, you could see the Leeds fanbase buying into his appointment.

  • Jose Mourinho

Needless to say, the suggestion that Jose Mourinho rocks up at Elland Road anytime soon is a longshot. It is one that has been floated by TalkSport though, which has created a little bit of noise around the idea and we fully expect the bookies to offer a market for that appointment – providing Leeds are a Premier League side, of course.

Mourinho has made noises about being open to taking on a Premier League job that might see him compete away from the top end of the league over the last 12 months, which many saw as putting himself in the shop window for the Everton job, but could Leeds appeal?

We think it probably would, particularly with the Chelsea legend having various disputes with the Turkish authorities.

He’d certainly tick the box of being a big name, which the Leeds ownership might see as a statement appointment, whilst the two parties would be well united in being widely disliked by neutrals. A match made in heaven? Or hell, perhaps?
