Next Coventry City Manager Odds: After Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard had been found wanting in his last couple of jobs in the Premier League but his record at Championship level is very strong.

He is proving his coaching credentials right now at Coventry where he has the Sky Blues on the brink of the playoffs.

With noises that parachute payment clubs could try and tempt him away, who would the contenders to become Coventry City’s next manager be?

Coventry City Next Manager: Follow Similar Appointment Path?

Losing Frank Lampard this early into his tenure would be a nightmare scenario for Coventry fans. He’s done a fantastic job since being appointed in November. At the time though, his appointment wasn’t universally approved of.

The success he has enjoyed since being in situ though might give us an indication that the decision makers at Coventry could look for a similar profile in their next appointment process, should they need to make the move sooner rather than later.

Next Coventry Manager Candidates – Who Will Replace Lampard?

There was a real split in the fanbase when Mark Robins was sacked before Christmas and the appointment of Lampard wasn’t immediately one to unify them.

There is no dispute about whether or not they’re behind their boss now though.

How would they respond to some of the names likely to be in contention if he does move on?

  • Lee Carsley

When Lee Carsley stepped into the England senior manager role for an interim period, there was a lot of noise about Lampard potentially having the perfect profile to take on the Under 21 job. That obviously won’t happen now but could Carsley be seen as a candidate for the Sky Blues?

At some point, you feel Carsley is going to want to have another crack at club football – and Coventry could be the best fit. He has experienced the thrill of sitting in the Coventry hotseat having twice served as caretaker in 2012 and 2013 respectively and twice represented them as a player too.

With a track record of playing an attractive style, developing players and, ultimately, combining that with getting results you can see why he is highly rated. Despite all of those positives, is it that realistic that Carsley gets a crack at the Premier League straight off the bat?

  • Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard’s names feel like they’ve been linked throughout the bulk of their careers dating back to their playing days.

They have taken different routes on their managerial journeys, but both have enjoyed elements of success along the way.

Gerrard might have damaged his reputation with his decision to go out to Saudi Arabia and manage Al-Ettifaq but the job he did at Rangers, where he guided them to a Scottish Premiership title, cannot be forgotten.

The Liverpool legend ultimately came up short at Aston Villa prior to his spell in Saudi, which makes another bite at the Premier League feel almost impossible without earning his way back there but you can imagine Coventry and Gerrard having a conversation if a vacancy opens up.

  • Jim Goodwin

Jim Goodwin, along with Carsley, was one of the names linked with the Coventry job when Lampard was ultimately appointed in November. He could come back into the mix if ‘Lamps’ jumps ship in the coming weeks or months.

There are a few things that go against Goodwin, most notably the fact he’s never managed in England and that he penned an extension to his Dundee United contract around the time Coventry were last on the lookout. None of that makes a deal impossible should the Sky Blues want to do it though.

Goodwin has a good record north of the border too with his most notable success coming in his current job where he guided Dundee United to the Championship title last season before seeing his side keep pace with everyone but the Old Firm duo in 2024/25.

It feels like there is little more he can do in Scotland without landing one of those two jobs – and having played for Celtic, you can rule one of them out as a possibility too.
