After relegation from the Premier League, most expected Burnley to challenge for promotion. Yet, that couldn't be further from the truth...

It's been a strange season for the Clarets so far. Having been more involved in the Championship relegation race. So, after just a few months in charge, a decision was made to part with Nicky Hayen, with BetVictor and its sister sites pricing up the markets.

Let's take a look at some of the names in the mix.

Burnley Forced to Make Decision

Burnley were expected to fight for promotion on their return to the Championship this season, and they still might.

However, they haven't been doing so under Hayen. The Belgian coach, who arrived with a solid record, only won one of his 12 Championship games and the Clarets sit in the bottom three as a result.

With three points separating them from safety already, there was a real risk things would get worse before they got better. So, a decision was made - the right one, we should add - to part ways.

Let's look at the odds for his replacement.

Next Burnley Manager Odds - The Bookies' Favourites

Let's go over the favourites to replace Nicky Hayen and the odds for each manager.

Rob Edwards - 1/1

It's not really a surprise to see Rob Edwards as the favourite to be Burnley's next manager, especially compared to the odds to make him the new Sheffield Wednesday coach.

Having managed Luton, Middlesbrough and Wolves previously, he's firmly in that top end Championship coach. So, he could certainly offer Burnley what they need: reliability.

The Welshman has been named a 'strong contender' by Alan Nixon, as the 72 relayed. So, it's not a complete stab in the dark.

However, the market is open, so it's far from being a done deal.

Carlos Corberan - 2/1

Heading to Spain, Corberan provides an interesting option for the Clarets.

Having left Valencia earlier this year, he'd be a fantastic pick-up and there are similarities with his last job in England, West Bromwich Albion.

He'd be rebuilding a team that are struggling, with the hope of taking them towards the top of the table, which he did with Huddersfield Town, too.

Ben Jacobs reports that he's hoping for a Premier League job, but with Burnley looking to hire a Spanish sporting director, the links make sense.

Steven Gerrard - 3/1

Steven Gerrard is always in the mix when these sorts of jobs come available. Yet, I just can't see it happening.

He opened as the 4/1 favourite and there's been a bit of money for him, hence the move to 3/1. However, Goal relays that he's happy away from coaching, currently.

"At the moment I am happy, I am doing TV with TNT. I have signed a new deal. I have got some other bits and bobs that I do, some commercial stuff."

In other words, I don't really see it. There are stronger links elsewhere.

The Odds Elsewhere

There are plenty of other options in the market currently, and with no 'clear' favourite, things could move.

The fourth favourite for the job is Craig Bellamy at 6/1. The links between him and the club are clear. However, I'm unsure whether he'd leave the Wales job for a trip back to Lancashire.

Dave Challinor is 10/1, but that just doesn't seem likely. He's the clear favourite for the Sheffield Wednesday job, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't take it.

At 10/1, Robbie Keane is another option. He was linked in the summer, but there is nothing to say he's in the frame this time around.

Steve Cooper, at 12/1, is an interesting option. He's done this type of job before, with Nottingham Forest. So, he'd not be a stranger to the role. There would be worse appointments.

Thomas Frank and Scott Parker are 16/1 and I'm happy to just discount them both now.

Sean Dyche is 20/1 to return to Turf Moor, too, but again, that just doesn't seem too likely. His relationship with the club's ownership isn't brilliant, as he told The Football Boardroom, via the Burnley Express.

Taking a step back, it's a tough market to dig your teeth into. I'd not be staking much, that much is certain.
