Q: What's the best bet you've ever placed?
Not to brag, but I have a couple to choose between. Kosovo to beat Sweden at 8/1 was a nice one, especially since I backed it with a decent stake, and Manchester United to beat Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final at 9/1 (!).
As you can tell, I like to find value in the standard win-draw-win market as opposed to putting together an acca or a bet builder. I find that those two are so difficult to get right and take a lot of time. On the flip side, these win-draw-win opportunities don't come around so often.
Q: Which bookmaker feature do you think the industry gets most wrong?
There are many things I could mention, sadly, but personally I hate it when the bookie has poor design and navigation. I'm not too fussed about fast withdrawals, but if it's a pain to find the right competition and event, I'll be out the door quickly.
Q: What's the one thing a beginner should check before signing up to a bookmaker?
Read the T&Cs closely! I totally understand that a free bet offer might sound great for beginners, I've been there myself, but it's very important to go the extra mile. Check for wagering and minimum odds requirements, as well as maximum winnings and expiration timeframe.
Q: Is there a bookmaker you personally wouldn't use?
Oh yes, many! I was never a fan of the now-closed Aspire Global network and the ProgressPlay network also remains very much a no-go zone for me. But to stick out my chin a little bit, avoid bookies that are mainly casinos that have just added a sportsbook as an afterthought.
Q: What's changed most about UK sports betting since you started covering it?
As much as I have criticism of the industry, there is no doubt that independent betting sites have upped their baseline. Most of them have understood that good platforms and foundations are needed to ensure longevity.
When I started, Playbook Gaming was basically the only decent platform provider for both sports and casino. Now, however, you also have great competitors like Swifty Global and EveryMatrix, all three of which keep pushing each other to do better and better.
