The 2025 BetMGM Premier League Darts moves onto night 5 in Brighton. Luke Humphries has stamped down his authority in the early stages of this year's campaign.
After claiming his second nightly win last week in Exeter, he now finds himself seven points clear of Luke Littler in second after amassing 15 points in the first 4 weeks. The World number 1 defeated Gerwyn Price, Rob Cross and Luke Littler to claim maximum points and the £10,000 nightly bonus.
Michael van Gerwen lost for the first time in his opening match this year last week, and if he doesn't get a result tonight, he's in danger of being cut a drift from the top two. Nathan Aspinall continued his resurgence in Exeter after making the final the week before.
He beat Chris Dobey 6-5 before losing to Luke Littler who averaged 109. 'The Asp' has moved up to 5th in the table after the last few weeks and is now just a point behind the playoff places.
Stephen Bunting lost his opening match again last week and remains stranded at the bottom of the table. He's the only player this year yet to win a match but there were positive signs in Exeter as he averaged 104.89 in a 6-3 defeat to Littler who averaged 112.34 himself. I'd be surprised if Bunting remains winless over the next few weeks, but if he does, he could be in for a long draining season.
Gerwyn Price lost to Luke Humphries in his opening match last week but didn't play badly. He remains third in the table after a solid start to the season. Rob Cross played much better in Exeter and was unlucky to lose his semi-final to Humphries 6-5, whilst Chris Dobey extended his winless run to four matches after losing 6-5 to Nathan Aspinall.
Luke Littler created yet more history last week in Minehead as he became the youngest player to win the UK Open aged 18. Ironically, he beat James Wade in the final who previously held that record by winning in 2008, aged 25. Littler produced more magic and hit 47 180s with a tournament average of 104.35 on his way to his first UK Open crown.
I'm really surprised to see how big Price's odds are to win this match. It's quite clear he's playing much better than the Dutchman at the moment and I think the bookies have got this wrong.
Gerwyn Price was poor in his defeat in Exeter to Luke Humphries but he did win the week before and sits pretty in 3rd place in the league table. The way he's been performing this year continues to show that he's ready to compete with the world's elite again, which is hugely important for his confidence and morale.
He was unlucky at the UK Open coming from 7-2 down to force a decider before losing 10-9 to Connor Scutt in round four. Price played well though but didn't quite have enough to see the match through, which is hardly surprising considering the amount of matches he's played lately.
Michael van Gerwen continues to show glimpses that he's back to his imperious best but seems to lose a lot of matches nowadays to lower ranked players. The problem in the PDC now is that there is so much depth, which means if MVG isn't on his B game at least, then he's susceptible to defeat.
I'm not sure if he's perhaps trying too hard to close the gap on the two Luke's, or that he's trying to show he's back to form, but if he doesn't start to relax and find results then he may well fail to make the Playoffs this year.
I've said numerous times in previous posts that momentum is key in this sport and right now I think the Welshman has a lot more confidence in his game.
I fear a little for MVG, it's clear he's still one of the best players in the world but he also needs to relax and let the wins come naturally rather than forcing it.
Surprisingly, these two haven't played each other yet in this year's Premier League and even though MVG has a far superior head to head record (34-15).
I think the odds are too big for 'The Iceman' and I think he comes through this match to set up a potential tie against Luke Littler.

Luke Littler was unbelievable at times during his UK Open triumph and dealt with the standard against him superbly. The majority of players in world darts right now are raising their game against the young man, but the way he's comfortably brushing them aside is special to watch.
In Exeter on Night 4 he also produced some magic, averaging 112.34 and 109.67 in victories against Bunting and Aspinall before narrowly losing out in the final against Humphries. Incredibly Littler hit 20 180s in his three matches last week, which is more than Cross, Bunting, MVG and Gerwyn Price have hit over the opening four weeks of the Premier League.
Chris Dobey is on a tough run at the moment after losing his last four Premier League fixtures. He's now down to 7th on just three points after making the final on Night 1 so needs some results fast to avoid being isolated away from the Playoff positions. It certainly doesn't get any easier for 'Hollywood' though as he faces the in-form Littler in Brighton.
Although Dobey has lost his last four matches, he's still hitting maximums regularly and has it 15 in his last three defeats. That bodes well for my tips here as Littler is hitting 180s at a rate that is perhaps the greatest in darting history and hit 10 maximums in his quarter-final against Bunting last week.
These two players met in last week's semi-final in Exeter where Humphries came through a tight match 6-5. Humphries averaged 100.08 and hit seven 180s. Cross didn't play badly either and averaged 98.81, and before this defeat, Cross had beaten the world number 1 in their three meetings, including two on TV.
Cross has won only two matches in 4 weeks so far, which won't create a bucket load of confidence, especially as he had started the 2025 PDC season so well, picking up two titles. He was ahead last week against Humphries until 'Cool Hand' won three of the last four legs in 12 darts including a 167 checkout.
Humphries has had a dream start to his Premier League campaign and has now won two weekly titles in four. His win last week looked as though it would set up another Major title at the UK Open but he ultimately fell in the quarter-final 10-9 against a rejuvenated James Wade.
He wasn't happy at all after that match and felt Wade had played some mind games, but that annoyance may well transfer into concentration in Brighton where he could produce some excellence and blow away the field.
My tip here looks fantastic value, especially as this outcome happened in their previous encounter last week in Exeter. Humphries hit seven 180s to Cross's two and I expect that to repeat itself in Brighton.
Humphries just looks much the better player and scorer at the moment and after what happened in Minehead, I think Cross could be in for a short night at the office.

For me, this is another match where I think the bookies have it wrong. Stephen Bunting remains winless in this year's Premier League and faces Nathan Aspinall who has shown a vast improvement in performance and results over the past two weeks.
Bunting lost again last week but did average 104 in defeat to Luke Littler, which is perhaps why the bookies have him favourite. However, 'The Bullet' lost again in his opening match last week, this time in Minehead at the UK Open. He was a little unfortunate in drawing fellow Premier League player Chris Dobey, but he was the favourite in that match too, and lost 10-6.
I don't think he's miles away from regaining his form, and I would say luck has certainly gone against him lately, but he'll know he needs to start picking up points otherwise he could have a similar season to Peter Wright last year and become the whipping boy of the tournament.
Nathan Aspinall has won three of his last five matches to rise to 5th in the table, just one point away from the Playoffs. Credit to him, he's overcome some early struggles just as he did last season and looks set to go on a charge.
He played well in Exeter but lost in the semi-final to Luke Littler who averaged 109. He then went to the UK Open and had a very solid run to the quarter-final where he lost 10-7 to Josh Rock, but did average 98.45 in defeat.
As I always say, momentum is everything in Darts and we'll use that theory again by backing an Aspinall win. Bunting hasn't won a game on TV now since February 1st, where he beat Peter Wright 4-2 at the World Masters.
Surely this is now playing on his mind, and unfortunately he would have targeted this match to get some points a few weeks ago, but now with Aspinall seemingly finding his form again, it could turn into another disappointing night for The Bullet.
