League One 2026-27: Betting Predictions, Top Scorer, 1-24, and Odds

We are back for another season of predictions! This time, we're dropping down to League One after previewing the Championship in our last preview.

Last season, we had a pretty rough time, getting 5/13 predictions right. However, we had a good season overall, with 38% of our outright predictions coming in and we are going to rejig things a little this year.

Instead of betting on promotion for all of the play-off contenders, we are going to look at the 'Top X market', simply for a bit more value. Of course, we will also stick with the 1-24 (and hope we do a bit better this time!).

League One is a difficult league, simply because there are so many factors to play with. From big money rises from League Two to big money dropping from the Championship, it is a really tough one to assess.

It is also important to note that all predictions are made with the current state of teams and potential arrivals/departures.

Who Will Win the League One Title?

Picking a winner in League One is a pretty big challenge at the best of times. However, that won't put us off attempting it!

We've seen it all too many times when a relegated side feels like they should go straight back up and doesn't. However, I don't think Sheffield Wednesday will be added to that group.

In fact, I think they'll return at the first time of asking and do so as champions.

They were all but confirmed as relegated before the start of last season, so they've had a lot of time to plan this season to the point where relegation was welcomed like an old friend after years of just about surviving.

The departure of Dejphon Chansiri also has played a major part in the feel-good spirit returning to the club. With no points deducted this season, they will have a fine crack at League One.

Especially with signings like Ricardo Santos, Louie Barry and Harry Gray. We can't forget the return of their captain Barry Bannan, either. 7/1 looks too big for them to win the league.

Then, last season, I went for Luton Town and Huddersfield Town as my title winners. Neither won the league or even went up, so I'm going for a second bite of the cherry and I'm going for Luton to get a Top Two spot.

Jack Wilshere's side were the second best in the division from Matchday 30 onwards and with some smart recruitment this summer, they should be able to contest the league.

After recovering from the double drop, they could well start building for the future again this season.

Who Will Gain Promotion From League One?

We could be in a position where my two title contenders are in the play-off race and vice versa. Like I say, it's tough to call, especially at the top.

So, now we'll look at the teams who could feature in the top six and fight for play-offs.

Starting off, I've gone for Leicester in third and they could be anything this season. There can be no denying that they are a troubled side and this has shown in recent years.

As a squad, there is plenty of quality still even if it is rather jagged. If Russell Martin can hit the ground running, they'll do just fine, but I wouldn't bet on them this season. There is little value at 1/3 for how many questions I've got.

Huddersfield Town are certainly questionable, as they have gone for the unexperienced head coach route again. However, Martin Drury clearly is someone with promise.

Supported by Jon Stead and Alan Knill - who was a big part of Chris Wilder's success in recent years - he leads a fantastic squad and with some promising summer additions, they could go one step further this season.

Then, I'm going for Plymouth Argyle, which may be somewhat of a shaky pick with the loss of Lorent Tolaj.

However, Luton were the only League One side to pick up more points than them in the final 16 matchdays of the season and Tom Cleverly can certainly keep that up.

Recruitment so far has been especially promising, too, and I think they can challenge for a top six spot this time around after only missing out narrowly last season.

I'm then going for Oxford United in sixth, who I think could certainly challenge. Yes, it certainly brave looking at every team who came down to be involved in the top six.

However, they have not lost anyone of major notice and they have the squad to challenge in League One again, having shown quite a bit of fight in the latter stages of the season.

Outside Shouts

Looking away from my picks, I don't mind any of the North West teams, really. However, I'd feel more confident about the chances of Stockport County and Blackpool.

Although they have lost Dave Challinor, the Hatters have appointed smartly in Jim McNulty - who used to play for the club - and he did excellent work with Rochdale recently.

Then, I think the Tangerines could be an interesting team to watch. Ian Evatt has averaged 1.5 points per game since being appointed and with a strong summer, they could make a big push. 14/5 with SpreadEx isn't a terrible price...

Who Will Be Relegated From League One?

Now that we have looked at the top, it's time to look towards the bottom and unfortunately, there aren't really any major calls from me in this department.

Going down as bottom, I've gone for Burton Albion, who have teetered on the edge for a few seasons now. However, the league this year just looks so strong. So, I think they'll succumb to it.

Their recruitment so far has not really inspired and I think staying up this season will just be too much of an ask.

After their promotion, I think Bromley could also find the league a bit too tough, and I think they'll also head back down.

Their recruitment has certainly been interesting and there are a few names that stand out. However, they do not have a profile of a team that will be outside the bottom four, I don't think.

Doncaster Rovers are my big price relegation team this year, after I picked out Rotherham last season.

There have been some interesting pick-ups from Donny, that cannot be denied and the re-signing of Alfie May on loan could prove to keep them up.

However, the sale of Luke Molyneux to a League Two club would suggest a lot about their chances this season.

Finally, I think Wimbledon could struggle heavily this season.

In the second half of last season, they picked up 25 points which was enough after a fantastic start to life in League One. However, I don't think they'll be as fortunate to see that same start.

Recruitment hasn't convinced me otherwise and after a poor 2026, I think the 2026/27 season will follow that trend.

Who Will Be League One's Top Scorer?

The top scorer picture in the Championship is not the easiest to unravel. Indeed, there are quite a few easy picks that could be made at the top of the market, as the odds suggest.

As a result, I'm going to look at the Each-Way markets, as I feel there are a few bigger prices that are worth a go.

Starting with Joe Taylor, I backed him last season to be top scorer at 40/1 and he was rather far off the mark in the first half of the season.

However, a loan to Wigan saw him score 11 goals in 22 games and that form could continue back with his parent club, who have not taken advantage of any interest this summer. At 25/1, he's not a bad EW shout at all.

Then, I really like the look of Emre Tezgel. On loan from Stoke, he joins a Wycombe side who have aspirations of a play-off finish this season and that can certainly be achieved with him at the helm.

The Chairboys scored 69 goals last season and with Tezgel scoring 10 in 31 last season in League Two, this could be the perfect next step for the England U20 striker. At 33/1, he could well be in the mix.
