The 125th edition of the US Open begins on Thursday and will be played at the Oakmont Country Club for the 10th time. There has been huge discussion about the length of the rough, speed of the greens, and the contoured greens, and as usual, the US Open will be a stern test for all 156 competitors.
In every build-up to a US Open, there is always talk around the length of the rough, and this year is no different. Oakmont will have a semi-cut of around 1.5 yards before the ball reaches the 5-inch-long grass, and the players haven't been shy about posting videos of how the ball appears to vanish in the thick rough.
Oakmont is also defended by 170 bunkers and severely canted greens, which run at a rumoured 16 on the stimpmeter. The greens will be firm and fast, which suggests the players will require accurate iron play and an elite touch with the putter.
Accuracy looks to be the key trait for getting around this golf course, but don't be fooled, as you will still need to have length, as Oakmont has the longest par 3 in US Open history at 289 yards, and two 600+ yard par 5s.
Scottie Scheffler comes into this week in supreme form after winning three times in his previous four starts, including winning the PGA Championship last month. The World Number One has regained his form from 2024 and has begun dominating once again, and is rightly the odds-on favourite to lift the trophy.
However, going back to 2009, 12 of the last 16 US Open champions had never won a major title. With this in mind, we can take a look at other players in the market and hope that Scheffler doesn't dominate the field.
The ever-popular and defending US Open Champion, Bryson DeChambeau, is my first pick this year. The American has won this event twice, in 2020 at Winged Foot and in 2024 at Pinehurst No.2. He's also got his head around Augusta after two top 6 finishes in the last two years. These results suggest that DeChambeau has found the game to compete on tough golf courses, and that feels like a great omen if you are in the Americans' camp.
His power his unquestioned, and he is the longest hitter in the field, which could prove a massive advantage on a course like this, if he keeps his accuracy stable.
Bryson has finished in the top six in his last five American Major tournaments and has been leading at a point during the week in his last five starts. As always, DeChambeau will be fired up and will want to prove a point against the PGA Tour's best players, and he'll have a great chance again here at Oakmont.

Sepp Straka has had a breakthrough season in 2025 and has already won twice this year, at The American Express in January and the Truist Championship last month. The 32-year-old has cemented his place in the European Ryder Cup team for this year, and the only thing missing on his resume right now is a Major Championship win.
The Austrian has missed the cut in both Majors so far this season, at The Masters and The PGA, but if we look at his stats, it looks very promising for a course like this. On the PGA Tour this season, he's ranked 2nd for Strokes Gained (Total), 4th for SG (Tee-To-Green), 3rd for SG (Approach The Green), and 17th for SG (Putting).
For me, looking at those stats, you can't ignore a player like Straka at Oakmont, and I think he'll be well in the mix come Sunday.

Harris English has a fantastic record at the US Open with three top 10s in his last 5 starts. The American also has a scoring average of 71.81 at this event, and if he does that again this week, he'll be well in the mix.
English has finished in the top 22 in five of the last six US Major Championships, including a career best 12th at The Masters in April.
A winner earlier this year at The Farmers Insurance Open and a 2nd at the PGA Championship last month behind Scottie Scheffler, makes 60/1 look a very enticing price for the 35-year-old.

Cameron Young remains winless on the PGA Tour in his career, but has gone closer than most over the last few seasons. He lost his form completely at the start of 2025 with five missed cuts in nine events, but he is now starting to show signs of some form.
He has four top 25s in his last seven starts, including a T4 last week at the RBC Canadian Open. A T25 at The Memorial Tournament the week before in a signature event is also a positive sign coming into this week's US Open.
If we go on the trend that there's been a lot of first-time Major Winners over the past 16 years at the US Open, I think Young fits that bill perfectly. After struggling to get over the line in a standard PGA Event so many times, a Major Title will be just what he needs to kick on in his career, and at 100/1, it looks great value to me.
