The PGA Tour action moves on to the third signature event of the year - The Genesis Invitational. Hideki Matsuyama won the first signature event of the season at The Sentry, whilst the in-form Rory Mcilroy won at Pebble Beach.
This year's Genesis Invitational will be slightly different as it is being played on the South Course at Torey Pines after the devastating wildfires prevented it from being played at its usual home, the Riviera Country Club.
The Signature Events are always well attended by the top players, and this year it's no different with 7 of the top 10 in the world rankings all competing for the $20,000,000 prize pool. World number 1 Scottie Scheffler heads the field, with Rory Mcilroy, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, and Tommy Fleetwood all playing this week.
Torey Pines is being used for the second time in 4 weeks after the Farmers Insurance Open was played here with Harris English coming out on top 3 weeks ago. That certainly brings doubts about how the course will play as it's hard to see it being in the best shape. The South Course at Torey Pines is the longest course on the PGA Tour with a length of 7,765 yards (at sea level).
This course is notoriously difficult to score on and has greens that repel approach shots so great iron play will be imperative. It also features pretty small and sloping Poa Annua greens so putting will be another big factor this week.
There hasn't been a lot of rain here over the past few months, stretching back to April 2024 since the most recent big downfall. The Farmers Insurance was played in pretty firm conditions with Harris English winning with a score of -8. The weather looks to be significantly different this week though with an 80% chance of rain and 20MPH winds on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
This will of course make conditions difficult over the first two rounds, but a bit of rainfall will make the greens and fairways softer, creating better scoring opportunities which will benefit the longer players. Pebble Beach was played in similar conditions and we ended up with a lot of Europeans and Australians at the top of the leaderboard, so that could well be the play here.
You'll certainly need to grind over the first two days at Torey Pines and you'll need to scramble hard when missing the greens here so a good putter and scrambler could be another way into the betting.
Rory McIlroy looks to be in wonderful form and has started the season fantastically, winning 2 of his last 3 events. He won in Dubai and at the recent AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM which is a very similar course to Torey Pines, especially as it's set to be windy and rainy over the first two rounds. Since the Signature events started at the 2024 Sentry, 6 of the 10 tournaments have been won by either Scottie Scheffler (4) or Rory McIlroy (2) at prices of 12/1 or less.
The Northern Irishman has been driving the ball brilliantly so far this year, perhaps the best he ever has done, and on this course, it will be a massive advantage. His recent Torrey Pines form is also extremely impressive even without not playing here since 2021. He was 5th in 2019, 3rd in 2020, 16th in 2021, and 7th at the 2021 US Open here.
The conditions over the first few rounds could well play into his hands as he has always played well in tough conditions and with they're being a few question marks over the dominant Scheffler after his injury, McIlroy could well take advantage and add another Signature event to his resume.

2025 is a Ryder Cup year and with Sepp Straka, Rory McIlroy, and Thomas Detry already winning on the PGA Tour this season for Team Europe, Robert MacIntyre will be looking to add his name to that list.
The Scotsman has had a decent start to his season with 4/4 cuts made, a T15 at The Sentry, and a T6 at the WM Phoenix Open last week. If the weather comes in like it's forecast then it will be ideal conditions for him to make a move. Growing up in Scotland, he's certainly used to playing in links-like conditions so rain and wind won't bother him at all.
He was 35th on this course at the 2021 US Open but he's without a doubt a better player now with two wins last year, at the RBC Canadian Open and Scottish Open. He did miss the cut at the 2024 Farmers Insurance that was played here but now he's made the decision to be based at home in Oban after citing homesick issues in 2024, so I expect him to feel much more comfortable in 2025.

Viktor Hovland has clearly struggled with his swing over the past 12-18 months after saying he didn't like the way it looked, even though he was having brilliant results at the time. Still only 27 years old, and still World Number 9, it's hard to believe a 6-time PGA Tour winner is 50/1.
The Norwegian is going to have to start getting some results soon if he's to be picked for this year's Ryder Cup and I think there's been some positive signs lately. He's only played twice on the PGA Tour this season with a T36 at The Sentry and a very positive T22 at Pebble Beach. He shot 70,73,70 after an opening round 65 there and this course isn't much different. If he can get his game consistent again, the talent is clearly still there.
At 50/1 I can't ignore him and I really think it's a matter of time before he gets his swing comfortable again, the constant changing of coaches hasn't helped, but on a course like Torey Pines, he could well get on a run here and reignite his career.
