Burnley and Leeds United won promotion to the Premier League this weekend, but the title has not been decided just yet. At the bottom, things are still proving to be very interesting.
The title race in the Championship has been one of the best in Europe, in my opinion, and it is not done yet. We still have two games left for things to be decided, so let's dive into the situation.
At present, it is Leeds United who are leading proceedings, and after their 6-0 win against Stoke City, that feels rather fitting. The Whites' goal difference, which did not need a boost, has gone up significantly, so the only way that they will not win the league now is if they slip up, which is why they are the clear favourites at 4/11.
In the late kick-off on Monday, Burnley edged a 2-1 win against Sheffield United, thanks to Josh Brownhill's brace, who has probably been the best player in the league this season, or one of them at least.
Because of these scores, it means that both clubs have confirmed their places in the Premier League next season, and now, they must fight for the title. I, for one, can't wait to see how it all unfolds.
The play-off picture is just as exciting, and we are now looking at what may be the final form of the top six, with only two games to go.
Sheffield United, after the loss to Burnley, are now confirmed to be in the play-offs as are Sunderland, who are both miles clear of the seventh-placed team in the division.
So, we start with Bristol City, who were well beaten by Luton away from home. It is the first loss in almost a month for Liam Manning's side, however, their recent exceptional form has given them the buffer of safety. But it was not even needed.
Sitting below them is Coventry City, who lost as well, falling to Plymouth Argyle at the bottom of the division by the same scoreline. Once again though, they are supported by their fantastic recent form, and this means that they are secure in their place with a nice gap to seventh. However, the defeat did not matter.
Why is this the case? Well, Middlesbrough, who sit seventh, also lost, falling to Sheffield Wednesday away from home, and this has meant that no ground has been gained on the teams above them.
There is a four-point gap between the two sides, in sixth and seventh (and eighth-placed Millwall for that matter), so if Coventry win this weekend, then they will be confirmed in the Play-Offs.
It's the Championship, though, and you can never be sure, with bookmakers not being too kind on the odds either (9/4 for Middlesbrough Top Six Finish).
Below, we have collected the top contenders and their respective odds to finish top 6 in the 2024/25 Championship season.
Honestly, this is the best division in the world. At the top, the league is fantastic to watch, and the message is the same at the bottom of the table.
We start with Plymouth, who once again won this weekend, beating Coventry by two goals, and proving that they have the quality to still play Championship football next season. Three wins in their last five is really intriguing, but it may just be too late for them.
Above them is Cardiff City, and I really would not be surprised if they finish bottom of the division at this rate (11/4). The Welsh outfit have not won since the middle of March, and ultimately, I think they could be as good as gone already, even with it being the Championship.
Luton Town sit in the final relegation spot, and it feels like a lot of the same can be said, as it can for Plymouth. In recent weeks, they have taken themselves up a notch, and with two wins in a row over Easter, they have 46 points and are knocking on the door of safety.
However, Derby County have a significantly better goal difference, and despite being level on points, it could be out of the Hatters' hands.
With that said... Hull City are only two points away from the duo, so there could still be a chance that the Tigers are brought into the picture (8/1)... After all, it's the Championship!
Below, we have collected the top contenders and their respective odds to be relegated in the 2024/25 Championship season.
