It's quarter-final time at the 2025 Betfred World Matchplay, on Day 6 at the Winter Gardens.
Gian van Veen got away with it at times during his 11-5 victory over Danny Noppert in the last 16. He was outscored and outplayed early in the contest, but held on with a wonderful display of finishing. He will need to step it up tonight, though, if he's to progress to his first World Matchplay semi-final.
James Wade has rolled back the years so far in this tournament and produced another vintage Wade performance in the last 16, beating the talented young Dutchman, Wessel Nijman, 11-5. He averaged 102.53 with a 65% finishing rate (11/17).
It was a masterclass in clutch finishing, something that over the years he has made look easy, and if he does so again tonight, it will be back-to-back semi-finals for The Machine at the World Matchplay.
Again, tonight the bookies have made James Wade the outsider, and after his performances so far in this tournament, I can't see past backing him at this price.
If he carries on in the same vein as his first two matches, Gian van Veen will struggle to compete with the Englishman's finishing. That will be key tonight, the Dutchman is prone to missing doubles at times, and Wade will not let him get away with that.
Experience is also a huge factor tonight, something James Wade has in abundance, especially on the Winter Gardens stage.

Stephen Bunting came through a scrappy affair, 12-10 against Gary Anderson in the last 16, averaging 92.71. It was a match of missed doubles, with both under 30% finishing rate, and Bunting will know he'll need to be better tonight.
He's been playing well this year, though, and is vastly experienced on the big stage, but this run to the quarter-final equals his best run in this event, after failing to get past round 2 on nine other appearances.
Jonny Clayton continued his impressive form in the second round, defeating Mike de Decker 11-8. He averaged 93.41 but hit 9 maximums, which shows just how well he is scoring again. At his peak, Clayton was always hard to beat because of his consistent power scoring, and that seems to be back now, which will give him huge confidence moving forward.
The key in this match will be the finishing. Both players are scoring tremendously well at the moment, but Clayton looks a lot more composed on the outer ring, and I think that will be the difference in a tight affair.
