The European Darts Trophy returns to the PDC calendar for its seventh edition this weekend for the first time since 2018. Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion here and has been in every final bar one, when Wes Newton beat Paul Nicholson in the 2013 final.
Luke Humphries headlines the field this weekend in Gottingen as the star-studded 48-player field will battle it out for the £30,000 first prize at the Lokhalle. Luke Littler and Stephen Bunting have both chosen to skip this event, leaving just six Premier League stars competing in Germany.
The absence of the teenager will give everyone a sense of relief, especially after his heroics in Cardiff last night.
'The Nuke' blew away the field and hit a 9 darter in the final to win his third nightly title of the season. Incredibly that's the boy wonder's record-equalling third nine-darter in just 7 weeks of his Premier League campaign.
Jermaine Wattimena lost 6-3 to Stephen Bunting in his opening match at ET1 but played well averaging 93.78. He's had a consistent start to 2025 after a resurgence in form during 2024 and is now a player to fear again. There was a long time when the Dutchman seemingly lost his head during matches but that seems to be gone now and he looks fully focused again.
The experienced Fin Marko Kantele has been around the sport for over two decades but has failed to make a mark. He's played in five PDC World Championships but lost in the first round on each occasion. He's also qualified for 14 European Tour events but has only managed to win 3 matches.
I think it will be the same story for Kantele and he will struggle to handle the scoring power of the Dutchman. Wattimena should have far too much quality here and I expect him to come through fairly comfortably.

Alan Soutar is in big danger of losing his Tour Card and his status as a professional as he languishes down at 56 in the World. His averages lately look promising, but he's still failed to make it past the third round in any of the Players Championship events this season.
Consistency seems to be the biggest problem in the popular Scot's game at the moment and he'll need to improve to challenge Menzies here.
Cameron Menzies is one of the most naturally talented players on tour and has recovered well after breaking down in his match at Ally Pally. He made it to the final of PC04 and was unlucky in losing 6-5 to Matt Campbell in ET1 in Belgium, where he averaged 97 in defeat.
For me, Menzies is the player in better form and the player that looks more likely to produce a good performance at the moment. Alan Soutar is just far too inconsistent and the value for a Menzies victory looks very good.

Kevin Doets has started to find his form this year after a tricky start to the season. He's now on a run of four quarter-finals on the trot in the Players Championship floor events and has averaged over 90 in nine of his previous ten matches. This feels like a big year for the Dutchman to push himself up the rankings after a fantastic World Championship.
Ritchie Edhouse has had a tough start to 2025 and hasn't found his form at all. He did beat Nathan Aspinall 6-5 in the first Euro Tour event of the season but that's his only result of note so far.
Edhouse always seems to play much better on the big stage and proved that by winning the European Championships last year.
He hasn't kicked on at all since though and Doets is in far better form coming into this so I expect the Dutchman to win this and progress to the next round.

Ross Smith has had a brilliant start to the season registering two semi-finals in the Players Championship floor events.
He also had a fantastic run to the semi-final of EuroTour1 in Belgium a few weeks ago, losing from 6-4 up against Mike De Decker 7-6.
He had match darts to make it to the final but that disappointment hasn't stopped his momentum as he's averaged over 97 in seven of his last ten matches on tour.
Michael Unterbuchner was tipped to be a future star of German darts but it hasn't quite worked out for him.
In 2018 he made it to the semi-final of the BDO World Championship, was runner-up in the World Trophy, and made it to the quarter-final of the Grand Slam of Darts.
He followed that up with another run to the semi-final of the BDO World Championship in 2019 but since then he hasn't shown that type of form.
The German has played well on the Challenge Tour this season and is 10th in the rankings but playing Ross Smith at the Euro Tour is a completely different challenge. I expect Unterbuchner to remain competitive but ultimately Smith will be too strong for the home favourite.
