Most people will be familiar with lotteries. You buy a ticket and if your numbers come up when the draw is made, you score big. However, lotto betting sites such as Betfred works differently. They are not offering people the chance to buy a ticket for a draw, but the opportunity to gamble on what happens in them.
This means that the headline prize from the lottery draw in question is not what is up for grabs. Instead, people will be paid out depending on how many numbers they get right, with higher odds for each number. Furthermore, while people who win a prize in a lottery draw by buying a ticket have to claim their money, this is not the case for lotto betting.
Instead, any money that is won from a bet on the online lottery is paid out into the account. This means bets work in just the same way as if someone had placed a bet on a big sports match. Having said all of this, there are also more 'traditional' lotto sites with jackpots, such as Thepools or the well-known Lottoland.

In our quest to guide you towards a better lotto experience, we have put together our top five list of lotto bookies in the UK. We have already stated the key terms above and now, we will delve a little deeper and explain what we like/do not like about the sites in question. Of course, a list like this will always be subjective, but we have focused on the factors that truly matter for lotto players.
Betfred is known as one of the best betting sites in the UK and its lotto offering is no different, with a plethora of options for those who like to bet in lottos from all over the world. In addition to lotteries from various countries, with Ireland being the most popular one, customers at Betfred can also stake money on the bookie's own lottery draws.
Betfred's Nifty Fifty is an example of that, with a whopping £5m in prize money for getting all six numbers right. The maximum stake per draw is £1, meaning anyone who bets that has a chance at the £5m. In addition to the great selection of lotto games, we were impressed with the design of the lotto section at Betfred, much to our surprise given that the other sections are rather dull.
Furthermore, Betfred even offers special markets for the upcoming lotto draws such as which colour will be drawn first, if it will be even or odd and what number the bonus ball will have. The bookie also has a feature which allows you to bet with your favourite numbers every time. That way, you will not have to enter them over and over again.
Pros
As the name gives away, Lottoland is a big player in the lotto industry which recently has ventured into sports betting as well. The site is a given on this list, in other words, and just like at Betfred players will find a great selection of lottery games. For the most popular games, however, the minimum stake per line is slightly higher at £2-2.50.
Lottoland is also a traditional lotto site, meaning that the winnings are not calculated by odds. Instead, there is a jackpot for every game which will be handed out if a player gets all the numbers right. The MegaMillions game has the biggest jackpot at £800m+ (at the time of writing) and you will need all five balls right plus the megaball to win this. The minimum stake is £3 per line, though.
In short, Lottoland is a great option for lotto players and even though the prize money works differently than betting sites, the concept is fundamentally the same. Some might prefer the thrill of attempting to clinch a high jackpot, while others will prefer having fixed odds when betting on the lotto games.
Pros
Thepools is another site which rather recently launched a sportsbook, building on its already strong pool-betting foundation. While the sportsbook still has room for improvement, you would expect the lotto section to be good. We believe that this is the case, but it should be noted that the selection of games is far less impressive than Betfred and Lottoland.
There are four different lotto games at Thepools and the biggest prize pot stands at £9m, courtesy of the Minted 4 Life game. Winners also have the option of upping these winnings by taking £1m a year for a decade. Similar deals are also in place for the other games, but it is always recommended to take the lump sum immediately.
The minimum stake per line is £2 for the Minted 4 Life game, but £1 and £0.50 for the other games. Thepools ends up somewhere in the middle between Betfred and Lottoland, with set prize pots rather than moving jackpots, but the stake does not change the potential winnings. In our opinion, there could have been a few more games.
Pros
Cons
A jack of all trades, William Hill also gives its punters the opportunity to bet on lotto outcomes. The bookie does not have a game of its own, with country lottos the only ones available, and the library is thus not huge. On the other hand, this will suffice for most lotto players and especially those who only follow country lottos.
The odds are similar to Betfred, with 160,000/1 being the highest ones, and the minimum stake is very low on the site. Having said that, you will probably want to stake at least £1 in total to have a decent profit in sight. All things considered, William Hill can be a great option for those who want to place the occasional lotto bet.
For more fancy features, we would advise you to go with Betfred or Lottoland instead. William Hill does not offer any special Lotto, for example, and those can be quite fun. Betfred certainly stands out in that sense, even if we would say that William Hill is generally a better bookmaker.
Pros
Cons
Last and actually least on this list is Coral, but we could have easily named the sister site Ladbrokes here also. The two share the exact same betting platform, so you can take it that this is a lotto review of both. In any case, compared to the other sites on this list, Coral's lotto coverage is a pretty huge let-down with only three different ones: 49s, Irish Daily Million and Irish Lotto.
The highest odds are slightly lower than the competition - for the same game mind you - at 150,000/1. Granted that you would still win a lot of money with all the balls correct, it only makes sense to pick the bookie with higher odds. Furthermore, as was also the case with William Hill, there are no special markets for lotto at Coral.
There does not appear to be a feature to use your favourite numbers either, which is a feature that Betfred offers. Overall, Coral has some work to do to compete with the best lotto sides. Then again, if you already have an account at Coral or Ladbrokes and just want to place the odd bet, it will work just fine.
Pros
Cons
Several factors went into our verdict of the best lotto betting sites in the UK. Above all, we looked at how many different lotto games are offered on the sites, as well as what the options are for these. For example, Betfred even offers special markets for many of the draws, which is something that William Hill and Coral currently does not offer.
Since we also included some more 'traditional' lotto sites, namely Lottoland and Thepools, we also looked at the highest jackpots of these as well as the maximum winnings on the lotto betting sites. These are just a few examples of how we went about creating the list and below, we will outline the three key factors a bit more.
Of course, if you are looking to sign up for a bookmaker to start betting on lotto, then you will want a decent selection of games. Betfred is the undisputed king among the betting sites, while Lottoland takes the gold medal overall. For those of you who only tend to bet on one specific lotto, such as 49s which is available on all the listed sites, this factor might not sound that important.
However, having the choice to play another lotto game is never a bad thing and if your primary betting activity is lotto, then you will want to be signed up on the best site anyway.
One of the main reasons why people partake in lotting betting - as well as traditional lotto wagering - is the high potential winnings. Therefore, when we tested the sites, we made sure to double-check the prize pot/jackpots as well as the odds offered. If you can wager on the same lotto at higher odds on another site, it makes sense to switch, right?
We were a bit surprised by the lack of welcome offers at Lottoland and Thepools, seeing as they are big players in the industry, but perhaps it makes sense if you think about it. Welcome offers have primarily been offered in the betting and casino industry, not so much for lottos, and that is also why the betting sites have a clear advantage here.
Betfred is the only bookmaker listed with a dedicated lotto welcome offer, while Coral and William Hill's welcome offers are generic (but can be used to place lotto wagers). Given that the stakes are quite low anyway, some punters will not care about a welcome offer but it is certainly a nice touch.
