This weekend, the lead at the top of the League Two was extended, but it is the polar opposite at the bottom of the table. In fact, it is remaining a very close affair, and several teams are at risk of dropping into the National League.

Won Already or Four-Team Battle?

As it stands, Bromley are well on their way to League One, and they are doing so in some fashion, with a six-point gap formed at the top. It is no surprise that they are the favourites to win the League Two title this season, but there is still value at 7/4, in my eyes.

Despite that gap, they were unfortunate not win this weekend, being held to a 0-0 draw by Chesterfield. However, things could have been much different if Nicke Kabamba had not had a penalty saved at the death.

An eight-point gap certainly would have been nice.

Swindon, despite their loss at the weekend, retain that spot in second, but their grip on it is slipping. After this weekend’s fixtures, they are now joined by two teams on 46 points as well, including Salford City, who actually got the better of them.

The visitors took a 2-0 lead inside the first 31 minutes, and despite a late effort goal to make it 3-2, the Robins could not get back on level terms. As a result, their hold of an automatic promotion spot has weakened significantly, with them losing a huge six-pointer at home.

Sandwiched between Swindon and Salford is Walsall, who may also be sitting with regrets over their recent form. The Saddlers looked quite comfortable at one stage, but with only seven points from their last 15 available, questions have to be asked.

They did return to winning ways this weekend against Tranmere, but they need to start putting together a bit of a run moving forward now. If they don’t, teams are waiting to pounce.

Teams Waiting To Pounce

Things in the play-offs are also very close, with a few points separating several teams inside and outside of the top seven.

Starting with the pre-season favourites, MK Dons picked up another win at the weekend, this time against Accrington Stanley. A nice result away from home, and whilst nothing to get too excited by, they are only two points away from the automatic promotion spots

Very similar things could be said for Cambridge United, who have won their last three games in a row. Their form is really hard to overlook at this moment, especially with them unbeaten in League Two since October.

The final spot in the top seven is taken by Notts County at this moment, and their win against Crawley this weekend has certainly kept them out of bother. Before the game, they had drawn or lost their last four games, so their place was slipping slightly.

Nevertheless, they are far from being in a safe position. That win has put them on 42 points, but there are several teams looking to pounce. In fact, a five-point gap takes you to 11th, so there are certainly a few teams that could make a jump into the play-off race.

Colchester’s form is worth noting, given that they have been on a really impressive unbeaten run recently. In fact, their last loss came against Salford in December, so they are certainly making a few waves in the promotion scene and Ladbrokes' 13/8 price for a play-off spot is tempting.

Then, an eye needs to be kept on Grimsby Town, who have endured a period of struggle recently. However, three wins on the bounce have put them right back into contention, even if they are sitting in that aforementioned 11th spot.

No one can be written off yet, and there is a lot of football left to play.

Worrying for Some

At the bottom, things may be slightly different in terms of writing teams off.

Newport County sit rock bottom, and there has been little evidence so far that they can turn things around. With four points in their last 15 available, their position in the league looks to be in real danger, but they are not the favourites to go down

Instead, that title goes to Harrogate Town, who have gotten one point in their last six games. The fact that their last win came in September is telling, and with the bookies pricing them at 2/9 for the drop, it is rather telling.

Even then, though, they are not completely doomed.

Sitting on 19 points, just a point above the relegation zone, is Crawley, whose recent form is equally appalling. Their last win came at the start of November, and since then, they have taken four points from the 33 available.

It seems like it may only be a matter of points in the battle for safety this season, and when a draw could be as big as a win, it is telling about the quality on show.
