The League Two season started this weekend and there is plenty of potential for it to be an unbelievable season. In the early stages, it is difficult to call, but let's take a look at the weekend's action.
As it is the first week too, we have tried to base outcomes on predictions of certain teams. So, without further ado, let's dive into it!
For most people, MK Dons were seen as the clear title favourites for League Two this season, and it could well remain the case. However, they did not get off to a flying start, unfortunately for them.
Instead, they were held to a 0-0 draw by newly promoted side Oldham Athletic, which will be seen as a poor result anyway. However, failing to have a shot on target despite dominating the game is not great.
Work definitely needs to be done in the goal department; that much is for sure.
For the other strong title contender, Chesterfield, it was a good-enough start. A 1-0 win against Barrow will not have anyone rushing to put money on the Midlands outfit; however, it was a nice win against a side that can cause problems.
Results are what matter at the end of the day, and the Spireites have certainly been successful at starting that.
Walsall started their season strongly, winning 2-1 against Swindon Town on Saturday afternoon. A late winner from Connor Barrett sent the home crowd into a state of jubilation. Considering it was his first goal for the club, a moment to remember.
The biggest interest from this week, though, was Grimsby's win. Three goals and three points for the home crowd, as The Mariners toyed with a Crawley side who had only just come down from League One. Talk about a statement result.
Below, we have collected the top teams - aside from the big favourites - and their respective odds to finish top 7 in the 2025/26 League Two season.
With as many teams covered in the title bit, this section may be left a little blank, but we can still take a look at some results and what they mean.
Fleetwood were one of my picks for the play-offs this season, and they had lift-off this weekend, winning their first game of the season away at Barnet. The Fishermen did not really control the game, but made their moments count, and that is all that matters.
Goals from debutant William James Davies and Elliot Bonds were enough to separate the two, and there can be no complaints about how the season has started. Especially considering they were away from home.
Cambridge United also got the season off to a good start, beating Cheltenham 1-0 on the opening day. The U's will be looking for an instant return to League One and there are certainly worse ways to start.
Colchester relied on a late equaliser to keep their season started with a point on the board. Less than ideal, but better than nothing and better than some others predicted to finish around them.
Salford City and Bristol Rovers are two sides that many have considered to probably finish around the play-offs. However, both lost on the opening day. The former to Crewe Alexandra and the latter against Harrogate Town.
Below, we have collected the top four teams and their respective odds to be relegated in the 2025/26 League Two season.
As it's the first week, we're really basing a lot of this on my pre-season predictions. However, this can of course change very quickly.
With that said, each of the bottom four in my prediction picked up a point or more; I've already patted myself on the back. We start with Harrogate, who pulled off a 1-0 victory in Bristol, an impressive result indeed considering they had just returned from their stint in League One.
Away from home, there are certainly worse ways to start the season!
Accrington Stanley, Newport County and Shrewsbury all also picked up a point, keeping them away from the bottom of the division for the time being.
Crawley, perhaps, could get dragged into a real dogfight this season if they are not careful, but the opening day could just be a shock to get out of their system. In other words, it is far too early to call!
