Boro's Spot Now

Monday’s result means that we have a new leader at the top of the Championship, and it is not a shock that Middlesbrough now sit in first. Their recent form has been perfect, and they have truly capitalised on Coventry’s drop.

A 2-1 win at Bramall Lane will be met with no complaints from the Boro faithful, as they reached six straight Championship wins, which is thoroughly impressive, and the odds are reflecting that now.

For Kim Hellberg’s side to be crowned with the Championship title, you can get as much as 6/4 right now, which still seems like value.

With a two-point gap, they are certainly sitting pretty currently.

Sitting in second is Coventry, whose situation is becoming dire really quickly. The Sky Blues looked to have the league wrapped up, but a point from their last nine available shows how quickly things have deteriorated.

This weekend, their draw against Oxford United was met with boos at full-time, with the CBS Arena sensing that the dream may have gotten more difficult again.

In fact, they are now 5/2 with most of the best football bookmakers for the title, doesn’t that say it all…

On level terms in the odds, but not points, is Ipswich Town, who are seven points away from the leaders. However, they do have a game in hand, which needs to be considered; should they win that, they will have a four-point gap to fill.

Their recent form has not been great, with three wins, a draw and a loss. However, they have still accumulated more than Frank Lampard’s side recently, so you’d perhaps be more inclined to side with them for a title bet…

Gap Forms in the Play-Offs

In the play-offs, we start with Hull City, who are also sitting quite prettily on 54 points, albeit without the game in hand. So, whilst a title push cannot be completely ruled out, it can certainly be deemed less likely.

A thriller against Bristol City, where a squirrel (yes, really) was the talking point after the game, saw them on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline, and they have been halted a little.

Millwall, on the other hand, returned to winning ways, with a huge three points away to Wrexham, who currently occupy sixth. The Lions did the job perfectly and now have a huge safety buffer into the top six, which looks really appealing. It is no surprise that Bet365 have them at 2/5 for a play-off spot

For Wrexham, it is a missed opportunity to get themselves into a bit of safety. Had they won, they would’ve had a three-point buffer to seventh. However, they missed that opportunity, whilst strengthening a play-off rival.

Preston North End, as it stands, are the team pushing hardest for a play-off spot, and they currently occupy seventh in the table. Whilst not a pretty three points, their win against Portsmouth has certainly kept them in the conversation after a difficult few weeks.

Bristol City’s win against Hull has also brought them back into the discussion, considering they have won two of their last three games. 5/1 for them to get a top six spot might not be a bad bet at this stage.

Unbeaten in six and with three wins in their last five, Birmingham City are making a late promotion bid, and whilst they sit in 10th, they are only two points away from the play-off spots.

Six Point Deduction

Sitting at the bottom, there has been a bit of a shake-up recently, and things could get really interesting.

Oxford United still sit above Sheffield Wednesday in 23rd, but their draw against Coventry at the weekend shows that there may still be signs of life in them.

After all, they are only four points away from safety, so they may escape from the drop zone if they can get a few big results.

Then, in 22nd, is Blackburn Rovers, who have been surrounded by issues this season. It is not a shock that they lost this weekend against a growing Norwich City side, considering they had lost their last two away games before this weekend.

Like Oxford, though, they will have hopes of an escape, thanks to an expected bit of drama.

For those who haven’t been keeping up with the second division, there is now a chance Leicester could be relegated to League One.

They have lost four of their last five games, with the latest coming against Birmingham away from home. Considering the expectations on them this season, a game they should have potentially been winning. However, morale is low.

The reasoning for this is the six-point deduction they received, which has massively moved them in the table… As a result, they are only outside of the bottom three on goal difference, and you fear for the Foxes, definitely.

West Brom are also in quite a bit of trouble, sitting a point ahead. They have not won a Championship game in 2026 yet, and they are 4/1 to go down for a reason…

A draw against Stoke at the weekend was not bad, but their upcoming fixtures have a considerable amount of pressure riding on them.

The relegation battle is certainly heating up, and there are two spots left to run from.
