We are back for another season of drama, as the Championship season kicked off this weekend. Results across the board were interesting, and there is a lot to discuss.
As it is the first week too, we have tried to base outcomes on predictions of certain teams, rather than suggesting that a team is going for the title based on one result... So, without further ado, let's dive into it!
Below, we have collected the top teams and their respective odds to win the title in the 2025/26 Championship season.
This weekend's games did not give too much away, it is the first week of the season, so it is largely difficult to really anticipate much. Of course, we can take a few things away from the opening weekend, though.
We start with the favourites for the title, Ipswich Town, who stumbled to a result against the third favourites for the title, Birmingham City. It is a game which doesn't really tell us much, with neither side really proving much.
A draw was maybe a little harsh, with the Blues possibly deserving to start the season with a win. However, neither team is in a bad position thanks to the first game. It is probably their most difficult game of the season out of the way.
Then, we have Southampton, who snagged a win against Wrexham this weekend. Two goals in the final few minutes overturned the early penalty from Josh Windass, and the Saints will certainly go marching on.
Neither of the top three favourites lead the league, though. Instead that mantle goes to Bristol City, who finish the first weekend at the top of the league after an emphatic win against Sheffield United. The Bristolian outfit looked fantastic and will hope to continue on that next time out.
Below, we have collected the top teams - aside from the big favourites - and their respective odds to finish top 6 in the 2025/26 Championship season.
Again, comparing my own predictions and those at the top of the markets, there is not much to really tell from the first weekend.
Sheffield United have been on drift since the first game, and are now above Evens to be in the Top Six at the end of the season. Reactionary, maybe? However, a side that dominated the Robins only a few months ago to the team from Saturday is a stark change.
After a 0-0 draw against Hull, Coventry City have also been drifting a little bit in the past few days. An early kick-off on the first game, though, I am certainly not feeling any less confident of their chances at the end of the season.
Then, we have Leicester's win against Sheffield Wednesday, which was surely a given before the start of the weekend. However, the Foxes struggled a little against the relegation-threatened side and perhaps without the red card, they wouldn't have picked up three points.
Millwall and Charlton are two teams that I predicted to finish around the play-offs and they certainly started positively, both winning this weekend. Then, Stoke also have been a bit of a shock, winning 3-1 at the Bet365 stadium on the opening day.
Below, we have collected the top four teams and their respective odds to be relegated in the 2025/26 Championship season.
Like I said at the start, it is very difficult to predict things after just one matchday. That is very much the case at the bottom.
The bottom spot goes to Sheffield United after their humiliating loss to Bristol City at Bramall Lane. Sitting above them is Derby County, who many have predicted to just avoid relegation, including myself.
To round off the bottom three, Watford take the last spot. However, they were one of four teams to lose 1-0 on the first day; see what I mean about it being difficult to call just now.
In terms of the relegation favourites, Sheffield Wednesday sit at the top of the bottom pile after getting a goal against Leicester. The Guardian have since reported that there is a bid potentially being put together, so their odds may start to drift a little.
Oxford United were one of the aforementioned teams to lose by a goal to nil this weekend, falling against Portsmouth. They are currently the second favourites for the drop, at the time of writing this.
Then Hull and QPR both drew, so for now, they are safe from being in the conversation on points alone.
