Luke Littler suffered an opening night defeat in Newcastle, 6-4 to Gian van Veen. The Nuke has always been susceptible to defeat in a short format, so he will need to concentrate tonight to get the better of Humphries.
Luke Humphries came through an 11-leg thriller against Gerwyn Price last week, averaging 104.55. Cool Hand then lost to Night 1 winner, Michael van Gerwen, in the semi-final, but averaged 97.02 in defeat.
On paper, this looks like the tie of the opening round tonight, and I think it will deliver just that. Both players are in good form, and a moment of brilliance to break throw looks like the way to split these two.

Michael van Gerwen continued his return to form by winning Night One in Newcastle. The Dutchman defeated Stephen Bunting and Luke Humphries before overcoming Gian van Veen in the final to claim his second title of the season, having already tasted success in Bahrain.
Josh Rock began his debut Premier League campaign with a 6-2 defeat to Jonny Clayton. Rock actually performed well but ran into an inspired display from the Welshman, who posted a stunning 109.81 average.
Rock won’t be too disheartened by last week’s loss-he has more than enough quality to compete at this level. However, he now faces an in-form Van Gerwen, which is a daunting prospect for any player.

Jonny Clayton’s return to the Premier League could hardly have started better, as he opened his campaign with a superb 6-2 victory over Josh Rock, averaging an outstanding 109.81. The Ferret was unable to reproduce that level in the semi-finals, however, as he exited with a 6-4 defeat to Gian van Veen.
Stephen Bunting finds himself under significant pressure to justify his Premier League selection. The volume of online criticism appears to be affecting his form, which, in my opinion, is unfair given his achievements.
That said, Bunting remains a high-quality performer and showed encouraging signs despite a 6-2 defeat to Michael van Gerwen last week. Clayton, however, looked sharp and assured in Newcastle, and he may be well placed to capitalise on the pressure currently surrounding The Bullet.

Gerwyn Price lost 6-5 against Luke Humphries in his opening match of the 2026 Premier League. The Welshman would have been disappointed with that result, and looked to have bounced back well in Germany over the past few days in the Players Championship events. Price produced some incredible numbers at times, including a 6-0 whitewash of MVG with a 117 average.
Gian van Veen made a fabulous start to his debut campaign in the Premier League, reaching the final in Newcastle, but fell short 6-4 against MVG. Van Veen played well in Newcastle, but had a disappointing few days in Germany, winning just one match over two days.
The Dutchman has to be careful he doesn't over play now his schedule has increased, which is something he will work out in time. However, Price looks sharp, and I think he will have too much for van Veen tonight.
