The 2025 Premier League Darts league phase concludes tonight at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield. After 15 hard weeks, it all comes down to tonight to see who qualifies for the Playoffs at the 02 Arena in London.
The top 3 positions are already set, with Luke Littler topping the Premier League table for the second successive year. Joining the teenager in London is World Number 1, Luke Humphries, and the resurgent Welshman, Gerwyn Price.
Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen are the only other players in with a chance of reaching the Playoffs, and they meet for the second successive week in what will be a huge match for both.
Nathan Aspinall has one foot into the Playoffs after seeing off Michael van Gerwen in the quarter-final last week, and then went on to win the night in Aberdeen to record his second nightly victory of his campaign.
The Asp has opened up a four-point gap to MVG in 5th, and he knows a win in this match will secure his place at the 02 Arena. The Stockport star has finished 5th in each of the last two seasons to miss out on the Playoffs, and will be desperate for history not to repeat itself this evening.
Michael van Gerwen has only failed to qualify for the Playoffs once in his previous 12 Premier League appearances, but is staring that prospect in the face after back-to-back quarter-final defeats in the last two weeks. The seven-time winner has to claim his first nightly win of the campaign to make it to the 02 Arena next week, and his vast experience could be a huge factor tonight.
The Dutchman will know he isn't playing his best at the moment, but nights like this under pressure are usually where he comes alive, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he went on to win the night in Sheffield.
Aspinall has won four of his five meetings with Van Gerwen in this year's Premier League, but this is a different dynamic tonight, and in my opinion, Aspinall will be under more pressure after finishing 5th over the last two seasons. He has never made it to finals night at the 02, and if MVG puts him under pressure early, he could succumb to the magnitude of the occasion.
Van Gerwen has been involved in matches with over 5.5 180s in five of his last seven Premier League ties, and with Aspinall hitting maximums regularly at the moment, I think it looks a fantastic price for it to happen again tonight.
I expect this to be a tight match, but I'm going to side with MVG, simply because I think his experience of nights like this will see him over the line.
