Expert Opinion on the Scottish Premiership

Ben Dixon
Ben DixonTipster

There is often a lot of disrespect towards the Scottish Premiership. In fairness, it is understandable to see why, considering the league is often fought for between two teams: Celtic and Rangers. However, there is a lot more to Scotland's top flight.

Below the two giants, there are several teams fighting for places in Europe, and a few interesting sides have reached the qualifiers in recent years, which many often overlook, due to the dominance of the top two.

With that said, though, things are not only interesting at the top, as at the bottom, things can get really close with half of the division sometimes in danger of going down, causing some nice battles for spectators.

Perhaps the biggest point of intrigue is the fact that the league splits into two in April, where the table becomes even more cemented and slightly more competitive. It is certainly something to keep an eye on, and adds an extra bit of spice to an already interesting and heavily overlooked league.

Who Owns the Scottish Premiership TV Rights in the UK?

At the time of writing this, Sky Sports holds the majority of the cards when it comes to TV rights for the SPL, and you can expect to see up to 60 games per season live on the channels. The current deal runs until 2029. Then, 20 games a season are shown on Premier Sports, as well as cup competitions.

Interesting Facts About the Scottish Premiership

Domination at the top: The Scottish top flight has often been a closed contest between Celtic and Rangers, with the Glasweigan sides winning 109 titles between them. Behind them, the third-place team holds four titles. Since the start of the Scottish Premiership in 2013, the title has only gone to Glasgow.

League table rules: After matchday 33, the Scottish Premiership splits into two, with each team then playing one final game against every other team in their banding. This is certainly a rarity, and the SPL is probably the most well-known example.

Kick-off times: A majority of the Scottish Premiership games are played during the classic 15:00 slot on Saturdays, which also tend to feature an early game (12:30). Sundays have slightly different times, while Friday and Monday games tend to be late ones at 20:00.

It should be noted that due to blackout rules, none of the games between 14:45 and 17:15 on Saturdays can be televised.

Scottish Premiership FAQs

The 2023/24 Scottish Premiership was once again won by Celtic, who secured their third successive league title, and their 54th top-flight title. As expected, Rangers followed behind as they also did in the other two seasons.

Once again, the Tartan Boot is often contested by the bagsmen of Celtic and Rangers, but in the 2023/24 season, the award went to Lawrence Shankland from Heart of Midlothian. The attacker got 24 goals, the third-highest tally since the league's inception in 2013.

Rangers, at the time of writing, hold the most top-flight titles in their history, with 55, then Celtic follow in second on 54. With that said, the Bhoys have won the title in 10 of the 11 Scottish Premiership seasons - no shock who holds the other one.
