As of 21 November 2024, according to the odds, the favourite to win the 2024/25 Championship Golden Boot is Borja Sainz, best priced at 7/2 with bet365.
The odds mean that the probability for Borja Sainz to win is 22.22%.
The Championship top scorer betting favourites will change a lot during the season, but we will focus on the bookies ante-post favourites (before the season starts) to see if the bookmakers were correct.
Some bookmakers have Mateo Joseph, also known as Mateo Fernandez, as the odds-on joint-favourite to be the top goalscorer in the 24/25 Championship season.
He is a promising young striker at Leeds United, but we do not expect him to be the first name on the team sheet, given the tough competition coming from Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe.
This could be his breakout season, but it is a bold call to have him as the favourite for the top scorer of the competition with just one Championship goal to his name. An outside pick with better odds could be a shout, but as an odds-on favourite, we will stay away from this one.
Emmanuel Latte Lath is a more obvious pick from the bookmakers and was one of the best strikers in the Championship last season. In 30 matches, he scored 16 goals, 11 of which came in the last 12 matches of the season. If he can continue this fine goal-scoring form, he will certainly be in with a shout of the top scorer this season.
Also, it's important to note that if it was not for the Africa Cup of Nations, Emmanuel Latte Lath could've been much closer to last season's top scorers, but he played 14 matches less than Sammie Szmodics (27 goals) and 16 less than Adam Armstrong (21 goals).
However, he will be free to play as much as possible this season, and we think he will be one of the top scorers.
Luton Town are back in the Championship, but they have kept hold of the brilliant Carlton Morris, and we expect him to be back to his best this season.
In 38 Premier League matches, he scored 11 goals which is not bad at all considering the step up from the Championship and Luton's limited budget.
In his last Championship season, he scored 20 goals in 44 matches, and we expect him to perform similarly or maybe even better after his PL experience.
It's important to note that Elijah Adebayo started to play as the central striker for Luton towards the end of the season. Morris was often still on the pitch but a little bit behind. If we go from last season, Morris should still be the main penalty-taker, though!
Sammie Szmodics was an ante-post betting favourite for the Championship top scorer, but he joined Ipswich Town one week into the 24/25 season.
Despite being linked to a move away after finishing top scorer in the 23/24 season with 27 goals in 44 games, Sammie Szmodics is still at Blackburn Rovers.
It was an exceptional season for Szmodics, despite Blackburn struggling overall and finishing 19th and only 3 points above relegation.
We are sceptical to think this feat can be replicated again, and Blackburn will likely struggle once again this season. Maybe Szmodics will prove us wrong, and he is best priced at 25/1 to win the Golden Boot with BetVictor if you fancy him. Most other bookies have him priced at 14/1 or 16/1, so there is potentially good value at 25/1, but we do not think it will happen again this season.
Here is a list of the top goalscorers in the last 10 Championship seasons.
