It feels like Xavi Simons’ destiny sits in his own hands right now. His potential has been talked up for years with the Dutch youngster having donned the colours of both Barcelona and PSG during his teenage years. He has struggled to make an impression at what you’d describe as a truly elite level club though.
He has, however, turned in three solid seasons in a row – one in the Eredivisie and two in the Bundesliga – with the latest being the best of his career to date. Now, with the World Cup awaiting next year, Simons has to pick carefully.
Does he stay at a club where he knows he is a top dog and look to guide them back towards the sharp end of the Bundesliga? Or does he opt for a move elsewhere, to a bigger club, and take the risk of becoming a bit-part player again?
Leipzig might be the favourites to boast Simons in their squad come September 3rd but the fact they're priced at 9/4 might tell you they're far from nailed on to keep the creative midfielder.
There are obvious reasons why they will want to keep the player; most obviously the fact he scored 10 goals and assisted a further seven in last season's Bundesliga campaign. That though is a problem for Leipzig. Even with that impressive output, Leipzig could only muster a seventh placed finish meaning they have no European football this coming season.
With Champions League qualification a few jumps away from their previous finishing position and titles even further out of reach, it's not impossible that Simons pushes for a move. The only doubt really comes from the fact he only signed permanently in January.

Eddie Howe is looking to build his squad ahead of competing in the Premier League and Champions League next season; battling on all fronts is something that has caught Newcastle out before.
With Alexander Isak a guaranteed first choice starter, getting a second choice striker in is a problem for Howe and co but they still have to establish a way of getting more goals into their squad.
The versatility of Simons could well prove to be an effective solution to that issue. Not only can Simons play centre forward when required but he would play in the XI with Isak, bolstering the quality immediately and, by association strengthening the bench options.
In addition to that, Simons would add some real creativity to the Newcastle midfield as well thus creating more goalscoring opportunities, in theory that should unburden Isak without a direct rival coming to the club.
As for what Newcastle offer, for starters, the lure of English football and Champions League action might be hard to turn down. Also, this sort of move could be seen as the next step for Simons with Newcastle perhaps a good halfway house between Leipzig and a "proper big club".

Bayern Munich are well-known for mopping up the best talents in the Bundesliga and Simons would fit that bill right now.
Not only has he proven himself capable in German football but he also has an elite pedigree behind him having been at Barcelona and PSG previously; it means there won't be any fears about how he adapts to "big club" mentality and pressures – albeit he is yet to establish himself at one of those top sides.
What's more though is the Bavarians are known to be in the hunt for someone of Simons' ilk. They are understood to have made a significant play for Florian Wirtz, who occupies the same sort of positions on the pitch. He’s now gone to Liverpool.
Will Bayern be willing to put the relevant money on the table for Simons? He's not valued anywhere close to what Wirtz was so they will have no issues to financially do the deal should they want to.

Like Newcastle, Tottenham can offer Simons a route to both Premier League and Champions League football. The latter feels less likely to be a regular occurrence with Spurs though when you consider how they performed last season. Admittedly, they have changed manager now with Thomas Frank at the helm but does that help this deal?
On the surface, Simons walks into Tottenham's best team. The issue we foresee is two-fold. Firstly, if Spurs have to cough up in excess of £70m, will Daniel Levy be willing to go that far together with the salary package that could be needed; it isn't something Tottenham do regularly.
Secondly, if Spurs do have the money, is that how Frank wants to use it considering this will likely be his marquee signing. His former star, Bryan Mbeumo, is known to be available for similar money from Brentford; would Frank rather try and compete with Man United there, for example?
