‘Lets go Bunting Mental’ on Day 6 of the PDC World Championship as crowd favourite Stephen Bunting begins his campaign. He will play the German Kai Gotthardt who beat Alan Soutar on debut in his opening match.
Stephen Burton is making his first appearance in 6 years and will play debutant Alexander Merkx in the first round. The impressive Dutchman, Wessel Nijman starts his campaign against Cameron Carolissen and ‘Diamond’ Ian White will play Asian Tour qualifier Sandro Eric Sosing.
Stephen Burton is making his second appearance at the PDC World Championships and the first since 2019. I find that statistic quite surprising as I've always felt he's extremely underrated but I guess he's just a little too inconsistent.
He's into the top 64 in the World now and bar a disaster he should keep his Tour Card for next season. He’s a previous 3x champion on the Challenge Tour and made a run to a Quarter Final a few months ago in Players Championship 23. ‘Burtie’ also beat James Wade in the first round in Minehead last month so he knows he can beat the best on the big stage.
Alexander Merkx is making his debut at this year's World Championship by finishing 4th on the Challenge Tour order of merit. He had a great end to the season by winning two tournaments and backed that up with a Quarterfinal and a Semi-final in the following events.
The 30-year-old Dutchman has had the majority of his success on the WDF circuit and has won 3 times and reached the last 16 of the WDF World Championships and World Masters. He also represented Holland at the WDF Europe Cup this year so he's not short of experience.
The Dutchman is arguably coming into this tournament in better form, although Burton has improved the last month or so result-wise, he's still not averaging massively high and lost at the Players Championship Finals second round with an 80.79. It’s a tough match to call and I think it all depends on how Merkx settles on debut here.

Wessel Nijman is in wonderful form and I think he's primed for a deep run at Alexandra Palace. A lot of people are tipping him to go far in this tournament and I also think the same and have backed him to win his Quarter of the draw in my preview.
He's had a fantastic debut season on the PDC pro tour. He won his first senior PDC title in October, winning a Players Championship event and also finished top of the Development Tour rankings after winning 7 titles this season. He qualified for the Grand Slam this year, losing all 3 of his group games but averaged 106,105 and 111.
Still only 24 he has risen to 58 in the World Rankings, has a 64% win rate and 96.84 seasonal average, a very solid first year from the young Dutchman. He’s also a massive scorer and is sat 3rd in 180s hit over the year with 693.
There may be a couple of question marks over his lack of wins on TV so far in his career but if he takes his floor form onto the stage like he did at the Grand Slam, then it's only a matter of time before it clicks.
Cameron Carolissen won the ADS World Championship Qualifier to get here for his second appearance at Ally Pally. He got to the second round here on debut but only because Martijn Kleermaker had to withdraw after a positive covid test.
He lost to Danny Noppert 3-1 in round two but it was a very poor standard. I can't see the South African causing any problems for Nijman especially if the Dutchman plays well.
Like I said previously, Wessel Nijman is a prolific 180 hitter and when he's on form the statistics shows he hits 0.35 per league which is high. He’s 1/33 to win this match so clearly there's no value there but I can certainly see value in the 180 bets, especially if Carolissen chips in with one.

Ian White is a seasoned veteran on the PDC circuit and has had a lot of success, however, he looks to be on the decline and unfortunately for him, he hasn't got a great record at the World Championship.
He did reach the Quarter Finals in 2014 but other than that run he’s failed to get past the third round in his other 11 appearances, including a shock first-round loss last year 3-1 against Tomoya Goto.
We’ve not seen a lot of him on TV lately although he did have a great performance beating Michael Van Gerwen in the first round at the Players Championship Finals 6-1 with a 102.69.
He followed that up with a 6-0 defeat to Mike De Decker and only averaged 76.13, highlighting the inconsistency in the once extremely reliable Ian White.
Sandro Eric Sosing has qualified for his second PDC World Championship appearance, a year on from his debut loss against Lee Evans 3-0. He only averaged 75.59 in that match but we’ve seen better from him this year at times on the Asian tour.
He’s won an event and came runner-up in another with a seasonal average of 82.20. He has averaged 106.84 on the Asian Tour this year so he's clearly a capable player.
Ian White will be hoping he doesn't have a repeat of last year and succumb to another shock defeat at the World Championship.
I expect Sosing to be vastly improved than what he was a year ago so I think he makes a game of it, especially with White’s inconsistency over the past few years.
Backing the number of sets is probably the safe option here but looking at the odds of an upset in this game I think it's too big, especially with White’s frailties at Ally Pally.

The ultra-popular Stephen Bunting has had another very solid season on the PDC Tour. He started the year on fire, winning The Masters and reaching the Quarter Final of the UK Open.
Elsewhere on TV this year he has had two last 16s in the World Matchplay and Grand Slam but has lost in the first round in 3 of the last 4 Majors. ‘The Bullet’ has reached three Quarter Finals and two Semi Finals on the European Tour and he’s lost in the final of six Players Championship events this year including three in a row.
Although struggling slightly at the back end of the year in the Majors, I believe Bunting is coming here looking at having a deep run and I think he's primed to do so. He will also have the Premier League on his mind and with a good tournament here I can see him being picked.
Kai Gotthardt overcame a snapped dart to have a dream debut at Ally Pally beating Alan Soutar 3-1 with a 89.10 average. It was also a dream debut for us as he had the most 180s at 5/2 and won the match with the most 180s at 6/1, a beautiful result.
He’s without doubt going to have a much tougher match this evening and will need to improve to test Bunting but the German has undoubted ability and will be hoping to cause a shock this afternoon and book his place in the next round.
Stephen Bunting is a classy operator and has a pretty good record at Ally Pally reaching two Quarter Finals and a Semi Final in his previous 10 appearances here.
Bunting’s average for the season is 96.85 which is extremely solid and Gotthardt will know he needs to improve drastically to even nick a set.
