Day 7 of the World Darts Championship and we’ll see the first glimpse of the in-form Geordie Chris Dobey. 12 months after his Quarter Final heartbreak here, he takes on Alexander Merkx in the second round.
Elsewhere ‘Evil Charlie’ Karel Sedlacek will take on Welsh debutant Rhys Griffin in the first round. 2022 BDO World Championship semi-finalist Richard Veenstra takes on the number 1 ranked Asian Tour player Alexis Toylo. Finally, Brendan Dolan is back after his quarter-final run last year and he plays Hong Kong's Lok Yin Lee in an interesting second-round tie.
Quite possibly the man with the greatest darts shirt in history with the Max and Paddy graphics, a personal favourite of mine. Karel Sedlacek is a very good player and that shows with his seasonal average of 93.00 and a 56% win percentage.
With deep runs to a quarter-final and a semi-final on the floor this year, shows just how dangerous he can be. ‘Evil Charlie’ is another player in need of a run here to save his Tour Card but will just be relieved to have qualified after missing out on the World Championships last year.
If he manages to take his floor game onto the big stage he’ll pose a problem for anyone but so far in his career, he has failed to do so with a 5th round in the UK Open his furthest run in a Major.
Rhys Griffin has had a very tough time adapting to the brutal standard on the PDC tour. He’s only managed to get to one last 16 in Players Championship 15 and only has a win percentage of 39%. He has, however, qualified for both the World Series Finals and the World Championship through the PDC qualifiers so that shows he can win more than he's shown.
A seasonal average of just 87.25 will need big improvement here but it is his debut at Ally Pally so the occasion may well bring the best out of the Welshman.
Sedlacek doesn't hit many 180s and that shows with just 0.18 180s per leg, but he still scores very well and should have too much experience in this contest for the young debutant.
Griffin on the other hand has hit 180s this season, only slightly better than the Czech at 0.22 180s per leg but it's worth looking at.
It is also worth noting that Sedlacek has a better finishing conversion rate at 37.9%, to just 33.3% for Griffin and I think there could be some value found there.

Chris Dobey is, without doubt, a player on the up and has had a magnificent season on the pro tour this year, winning 3 Players Championship events and £98,000 in prize money, leading to him entering the Players Championship Finals in Minehead as the number 1 seed.
He has a running average of 97.18 and a win ratio of 67% which places him amongst the very best in the world.
‘Hollywood’ has struggled in the TV Majors this season though and has suffered first-round exits in the World Grand Prix, European Championships and the Players Championship Finals. He does have a pretty good record at Ally Pally though and has reached the Quarter Final in back-to-back years.
He did lose from 4-0 up last year to Rob Cross but looked so impressive before that and since that defeat, he’s bounced back very well this season and I can see him having another good tournament, especially with how open his Quarter of the draw looks.
Alexander Merkx beat an under-par Stephen Burton 3-0 on debut in the first round. He will need to improve on his average of 78.41 in that match but I think the average was dragged down a little because of the struggles of his opponent.
The Dutchman looks like a real talent and will be over the moon to win his first match, but this Dobey is on a completely different level to Burton which may prove a step too far.
Alexander Merkx hit 4 180s in just 3 sets, winning our tip in the first round, and Chris Dobey hits 180s at a rate of 0.34 per leg which is amongst the very best on tour so I can see value in over 180s in this contest. I fully expect the Geordie to come through this match because he's playing brilliantly.
