Onto the Evening session of Day 9 at the Alexandra Palace and we are in for a 180 fest tonight with all 8 players involved hitting maximums with ease so we should be in for a fantastic night of darts.
First on we have the talented young Dutchman Gian Van Veen, who plays Ricardo Pietreczko. ‘Super Chin’ Daryl Gurney faces a tough match against Florian Hempel who was very impressive in the first round.
World Number 6 Dave Chisnall plays crowd favourite Ricky Evans and rounding off the night, two great friends collide for the second time at this stage at the World Championships with Rob Cross playing the ultimate showman, Scott Williams in what looks to be the tie of the night.
Daryl Gurney has looked at times back to his best after a much better season in 2024 winning 63% of his matches and a seasonal average of 93.64.
He’s had some solid recent results with two Quarter Finals and a Semi Final in the last five European Tour events. On TV this year he’s beaten Michael Van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price which shows he can still live with the elite. With a quarter-final and three last 16s in his last four majors, he will be coming here confident.
A former two-time Major winner and two-time Quarter Finalist at Ally Pally, ‘Superchin’ is no stranger to going deep in big Major tournaments.
Florian Hempel retained his perfect 1st round record at Alexandra Palace in a very impressive 3-1 win over Jeffrey De Zwaan. A 92.73 average, 43% checkout rate and a superb 7 180s show once again why the German is so dangerous at this event.
He’s another player who thrives under the big lights and struggles on the floor, which is becoming more common amongst a lot of the players around his ranking.
Another two big power scores come head to head and although Gurney doesn't hit as many 180s as he used to, he’s still pretty efficient hitting 0.23 per leg. Hempel had 7 180s in 4 sets in the first round so I expect plenty once again here.
This is an intriguing match because if it was on the floor I'd back Gurney all day but as the German looks a completely different player at Ally Pally I think this could go close but I still expect ‘Superchin’ to squeeze his way through.

2018 PDC World Champion Rob Cross has been amazingly consistent in front of the cameras this season with eight Quarterfinals and three finals in the World Series including a tournament win at the US Masters.
He had a great run to the Semi Finals last year eventually losing to Luke Littler but he did produce a memorable moment with an amazing comeback from 4-0 down to beat Chris Dobey 5-4 in the Quarter Final.
‘Voltage’ had a victory on the European Tour at the Baltic Sea Open as well as a Final and a Semi-Final in 9 events played. On the Players Championship events, he’s been very underwhelming, failing to progress past the 4th round in 20 events he played in.
Scott Williams was excellent once again in his first-round match on the Ally Pally stage as he manoeuvred his way through a really tough game against the talented young German Niko Springer 3-1.
‘Shaggy’ averaged 96.24, had a 41% checkout rate and hit an impressive 9 180s. The charismatic Englishman proved once again how elite he can play in front of the cameras and it wouldn't be a shock to see him progress further in this tournament.
Once again I think the 180 market is great value, especially after Scott Williams hit 9 maximums himself in 4 sets in the first round.
Rob Cross isn't the biggest 180 hitter in the world but has still hit them at a 0.24 strike rate per leg this season.
I would expect this game to be close so there should be plenty of sets and they have played on this stage against each other before in the 2nd round with Cross winning 3-1.
Scott Williams is a different animal this time around though, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
