Onto the Evening session of Day 9 at the Alexandra Palace and we are in for a 180 fest tonight with all 8 players involved hitting maximums with ease so we should be in for a fantastic night of darts.
First on we have the talented young Dutchman Gian Van Veen, who plays Ricardo Pietreczko. ‘Super Chin’ Daryl Gurney faces a tough match against Florian Hempel who was very impressive in the first round.
World Number 6 Dave Chisnall plays crowd favourite Ricky Evans and rounding off the night, two great friends collide for the second time at this stage at the World Championships with Rob Cross playing the ultimate showman, Scott Williams in what looks to be the tie of the night.
Gian Van Veen is another young player who is starting to make strides as a professional in the PDC. He’s now up to World number 28 and looks like a player destined for the top 16 in the world.
The recently crowned World Youth Champion looks a real threat at this tournament but he will be slightly worried about his form on TV this season. Apart from a dazzling run to the Quarter Finals of the Grand Slam in November, he’s suffered five first-round exits in the Matchplay, World Series Finals, Grand Prix, European Championship and the recent Players Championship Finals.
We have to remember though he's only 22 and made his debut in the majority of those big majors this year so it takes time to get used to the bright lights and atmosphere of the bigger events.
The Dutchman lost on debut here last year after being 2-0 up but Man Lok Leung did produce 11 180s in a dazzling comeback but comes into this year's World Championship seeded and a much better player.
Ricardo Pietreczko proved his doubters wrong about his worrying form as he came through a good contest 3-0 against Xiaochen Zong in the first round. His timing was excellent because Zong in patches was brilliant but he got the job done with a 88.68 average.
‘Pikachu’ hit 4 180s and had a very impressive 56.25% checkout rate and he will certainly need to play like that tonight to get through a hard match with Van Veen.
The German will no doubt have plenty of crowd support and if he draws on that he may well trouble the Dutchman.
Pietreczko hit 4 180s in 3 sets in the first round and Van Veen is 15th on tour for 180s hit this season at a strike rate of 0.26 per leg so I'd suggest the 180s market once again is enticing.
I do expect Gian Van Veen to come through this match but it won't be easy and I think it could go 5 sets.

Daryl Gurney has looked at times back to his best after a much better season in 2024 winning 63% of his matches and a seasonal average of 93.64.
He’s had some solid recent results with two Quarter Finals and a Semi Final in the last five European Tour events. On TV this year he’s beaten Michael Van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price which shows he can still live with the elite. With a quarter-final and three last 16s in his last four majors, he will be coming here confident.
A former two-time Major winner and two-time Quarter Finalist at Ally Pally, ‘Superchin’ is no stranger to going deep in big Major tournaments.
Florian Hempel retained his perfect 1st round record at Alexandra Palace in a very impressive 3-1 win over Jeffrey De Zwaan. A 92.73 average, 43% checkout rate and a superb 7 180s show once again why the German is so dangerous at this event.
He’s another player who thrives under the big lights and struggles on the floor, which is becoming more common amongst a lot of the players around his ranking.
Another two big power scores come head to head and although Gurney doesn't hit as many 180s as he used to, he’s still pretty efficient hitting 0.23 per leg. Hempel had 7 180s in 4 sets in the first round so I expect plenty once again here.
This is an intriguing match because if it was on the floor I'd back Gurney all day but as the German looks a completely different player at Ally Pally I think this could go close but I still expect ‘Superchin’ to squeeze his way through.

Dave Chisnall remains the most frustrating player in world darts to watch for me, his talent is unquestioned but for some reason, it's just not happening for him in the TV majors this season.
Three 1st round defeats at the Matchplay, European Championships and World Series Finals including finishing bottom of his group at the Grand Slam. Away from the big stage though once again he's been brilliant, winning two Players Championship floor events and two European Tour events.
A former Semi-Finalist at the World Championships in 2021 and Quarter Final last year which may be tough to reach this time round as he's coming into this event having lost 9 of his last 10 matches.
Ricky Evans stumbled across the line 3-2 against Gordon Mathers in a very underwhelming performance in the first round.
Normally so reliable at the World Championships he clearly struggled with his grip and only averaged 86.23 but did manage 6 180s including 4 in the last set and averaged 96.59 when it mattered. A beautiful 109 finish got the job done and he’ll need more of the same this evening against the World number 6.
A very interesting match in prospect here because at the moment you just can't predict how either of these two will play.
Again though the 180s market looks like the value bet as Ricky Evans had 6 in his first game and Dave Chisnall as always hits a lot, this season at an impressive 0.33 per leg.

2018 PDC World Champion Rob Cross has been amazingly consistent in front of the cameras this season with eight Quarterfinals and three finals in the World Series including a tournament win at the US Masters.
He had a great run to the Semi Finals last year eventually losing to Luke Littler but he did produce a memorable moment with an amazing comeback from 4-0 down to beat Chris Dobey 5-4 in the Quarter Final.
‘Voltage’ had a victory on the European Tour at the Baltic Sea Open as well as a Final and a Semi-Final in 9 events played. On the Players Championship events, he’s been very underwhelming, failing to progress past the 4th round in 20 events he played in.
Scott Williams was excellent once again in his first-round match on the Ally Pally stage as he manoeuvred his way through a really tough game against the talented young German Niko Springer 3-1.
‘Shaggy’ averaged 96.24, had a 41% checkout rate and hit an impressive 9 180s. The charismatic Englishman proved once again how elite he can play in front of the cameras and it wouldn't be a shock to see him progress further in this tournament.
Once again I think the 180 market is great value, especially after Scott Williams hit 9 maximums himself in 4 sets in the first round.
Rob Cross isn't the biggest 180 hitter in the world but has still hit them at a 0.24 strike rate per leg this season.
I would expect this game to be close so there should be plenty of sets and they have played on this stage against each other before in the 2nd round with Cross winning 3-1.
Scott Williams is a different animal this time around though, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
