Day 4 of the PDC World Championship is headlined by 2x Semi Finalist, Nathan Aspinall. ‘The Asp’ comes to Ally Pally after an injury ravaged season where he has missed over 2 months of the season. Now injury free and trying to find his form again, he's been handed a really tough match against the impressive American Leonard Gates.
2020 BDO World Finalist, Jim Williams is first on this evening and he faces Paolo Nebrida from the Philippines. Latvian number 1 Madars Razma will play 2012 BDO World Champion Christian Kist, in what looks to be a very tight contest. Crowd favourite Ricky Evans is third this evening against Australian Gordon Mathers.
Jim Williams' career seems to have stalled a bit this season and he hasn't produced anywhere near what he’s capable of over the past 12 months.
He scraped into the Players Championship Finals as the 58th seed, losing in the first round in Minehead and has only played in two other TV tournaments this season, the UK Open and the World Cup where he was disappointing in both with a round 3 exit being his best at Minehead in March.
The Welshman has also only managed to qualify for two European Tour events this year with a second-round exit being his best result. It's been a strange time in his career but he's always managed to do ok at Ally Pally, reaching the last 32 in the previous two years.
Paolo Nebrida has had a very good season on the Asian Tour winning four tournaments and finishing 3rd on the Order of Merit with a seasonal average of 86.04. This is the Filipino’s third consecutive World Championship appearance after losing 3-2 twice in the opening round against Danny Jansen and Simon Whitlock.
This contest all depends on how Jim Williams plays, if he struggles then this game could turn into a marathon affair, if he's on his game then this game will be over fairly quickly.
As I mentioned before, Williams has a solid record here at Ally Pally and even with no form to speak of coming into this year's event, I think he will settle on that stage and come through this one comfortably.

Madars Razma has fallen down the rankings slightly in the last 12 months after failing to qualify for the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix for the second consecutive year. He also missed the European Championships this season and lost early in the UK Open, the World Cup and the Players Championship Finals.
This will be the Latvian’s 6th appearance at Ally Pally with his best result coming 12 months ago when he lost in the last 32 to Michael Smith. He hasn't had a bad season in the Players Championship floor events, finishing 38th on the order of merit and has a seasonal average of 91.20.
The 2012 BDO World Champion returns to Ally Pally 12 months after being the first player to feel the pure talent of Luke Littler, losing 3-0 in the first round. He qualified for his 6th appearance here by finishing 3rd on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit.
Even without a Tour Card he's played a lot this season in the Players Championships and reached a Quarter Final and a Semi Final this year.
Madars Razma is the favourite for this game but I think it's closer than the odds suggest. An injury-free Christian Kist is always dangerous and he knows how to win on the big stage.
I'd expect a tight game as both players' seasonal averages are very similar so I can easily see this being a long match.

Everyone always looks forward to a Ricky Evans walk-on at the World Championships and I'm sure this year will be no different.
However, in truth, he only just scraped through to qualify for his 10th appearance at Ally Pally. Away from his entertaining persona, ‘Rapid’ Ricky is an extremely capable dart player and has reached the last 32 here 5 times. His 2024 season has been very puzzling, with many great performances including a brilliant run to the Semi Final of the UK Open in March.
Unfortunately for him, though he's had some extremely bad luck with his first-round draws in the Players Championship floor events and is coming here with just 4 wins in his last 25 matches. A 93.06 seasonal average is very solid though and he’ll be hoping he plays similar to that in this event.
Gordon Mathers qualified for his 4th World Championship by winning the Oceanic Masters. He finished 5th on the DPA Tour this year and won 2 tournaments. He's had a tour card before so he's no stranger to the high standard in the PDC. With a seasonal average of just 82.45, he’ll need to up that significantly to trouble Ricky Evans here.
Mathers is a very capable player but he’s not got a great record here at the World Championships. On the other hand, Ricky Evans always seems to play some good stuff on the Ally Pally stage. I don't think the lack of wins over the last few months will affect ‘Rapid’ too much and I envisage it being a pretty tough night for the Australian.

Nathan Aspinall hasn't had much luck this season and has struggled with injury and admitted to having a bout of dartitis. He’s now recovered and injury-free and has also been to see a psychologist to ease his dreaded dartitis concerns.
All positive signs now for ‘The Asp’ and he comes into this tournament somewhat under the radar, which personally I think he’ll like. He could do with a good run here though because right now I'd assume he won't be picked for the Premier League, something he's only missed once in the previous 5 years.
This will be Aspinall’s 7th appearance at Ally Pally and since making back-to-back Semi-Finals in his first two appearances, he has failed to progress past round 3 since and lost in round 2 last year 3-0 to Ricky Evans.
Leonard Gates produced a masterclass in finishing in his 3-1 victory over an out-of-sorts Cameron Menzies with finishes of 138,120 and 122. He hit 5 180s but only managed an average of 82.96. The American certainly got the crowd on his side early with his dance moves on the walk on and he’ll need them on his side again this evening if he’s going to beat Nathan Aspinall.
The odds in this match are a little one-sided which I don't particularly agree with. Nathan Aspinall is a huge favourite and I don't think he should be so heavily odds on as Gates is a real classy operator when he's on his game.
If Aspinall keeps the crowd quiet and gets on top of the American early I think he’ll go on to win fairly comfortably but with doubts over ‘The Asp’ form it really isn't easy to predict.
Gates really needs to improve on his average from his first round though and if he doesn't he’ll be in big trouble against the experience of Aspinall.
