Time for Day 5 of the World Darts Championship and this afternoon we get our first glimpse of the ‘German Giant’ Gabriel Clemens. He will play Robert Owen in the second round and the Welshman needs a victory to save his Tour Card.
Other games this afternoon will see ‘The Countryman’ Chris Landman play young Hong Kong star Lok Yin Lee. ‘The Riot’ Callan Rydz will play Croatian Romeo Grbavac in a very interesting first-round tie and Grand Slam finalist Martin Lukeman will open his World Championship campaign with a match against Nitin Kumar from India.
2023 WDF World Championship runner-up, Chris Landman will play in his second PDC World Championships this year. The Dutchman hasn't found it easy on tour this season and has failed to progress past round 4 in the Players Championship floor events until a miraculous run to the Semi-final, hitting on a 9 darter on route in the penultimate event of the season.
This pushed Landman up to 61 on the Pro Tour order of merit which meant he Qualified for the Players Championship Finals and Ally Pally. He failed to get past round 2 in both Majors he qualified for this year and has a seasonal average of 90.05.
Lok Yin Lee is arguably the weakest player of the Asian qualifiers this year and left it late to qualify for his debut here by reaching the Semi-Finals of the Asian Championship. He finished 14th on the Asian Tour order of merit with a seasonal average of 78.59.
He will need to massively improve on that to win his first-round match here. The 23 year old has represented Hong Kong three times at the World Cup, so he does have some stage experience.
Chris Landman will be hoping to reignite his form, and the World Championship will be the perfect time to do so. I can't see him being troubled by Lok Yin Lee and I can see it being a comfortable victory through to round 2.

Callan Rydz has had a very inconsistent season and has fallen to number 43 in the World Rankings. An amazing talent on his day and made a brilliant run here in 2022, reaching the Quarter Final.
He was seeded at the World Championship last year but has failed to qualify for the big TV majors this season and with early exits in the UK Open and the Players Championship finals, he’ll be looking to have a run here and gain some valuable prize money.
Romeo Grbavac will be making his debut at the PDC World Championship after coming through the East European Qualifier. His career seems to be on the up and has found success on the Modus Super Series this year as well as on the Challenge Tour.
The Croatian has represented his country twice at the World Cup and had a great run to the Quarterfinal with Boris Krcmar this year and beat team Wales on route.
Callan Rydz is known for losing his head during games at times and ultimately it has cost him victories in the past. If he manages to keep focused he should navigate his way through but he won't have it all his own way against the talented Croatian.
As always though Rydz remains a pretty big scorer and I expect a few 180s out of him if the match goes to 4 sets, there should be plenty of 180s.

Martin Lukeman comes into this year's World Championship in terrific form. Although he hasn't been seen a great deal in the TV Majors this year, he’s certainly taken advantage of the ones he has been in. A great run to the UK Open Quarter Final in March with solid victories over Gary Anderson and Danny Noppert on route.
He then qualified for the Grand Slam in November and had a terrific run to his first Major Final, ultimately losing to Luke Little but ‘The Nuke’ was on a different planet in that game.
He’s had a Semi-Final and two Quarter Finals in the floor events this year and has a running average of 93.87. He’s lost in the second round the previous two years but ‘Smash’ will play Andrew Gilding if he wins here and I think he could be ready for another deep run in a Major.
Nitin Kumar has qualified for his 4th World Championship by winning the Indian Qualifier. He’s been playing on the Asian Tour this season and has had some good results with 3 Quarter Finals, 2 Semi-Finals and a Final.
In his previous 3 appearances at Ally Pally he's lost his opening game on each occasion and failed to win a set, with his running average at just 80.72 for the season, I can see that happening again this year if he doesn't improve.
Lukeman should be way too strong in this match and I can't see him being troubled, especially with his form on TV this season. He shouldn't lose a set unless Kumar dramatically improves on what we’ve seen previously on the Ally Pally stage.

Gabriel Clemens looked to be the next German superstar after his run to the Semi-Finals here two years ago but unfortunately, he hasn't pushed on since. He’s defending £100,000 on his rankings from that run and now faces the possibility of falling out of the top 32 in the World. This is a really big tournament for the ‘German Giant’ and he's really under pressure for a deep run.
He failed to qualify for the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix this year and in the six TV events he's played in this season he’s had early exits in all of them. He’s still hitting a lot of 180s on tour with 327 over the season and he’ll be hoping that returns on stage for this huge tournament for the German.
Robert Owen caused a bit of an upset in his first-round match with a 3-1 victory over the well fancied Niels Zonneveld. ‘Stack Attack’ averaged 91.64 and hit 3 180s en route to his maiden victory on the Ally Pally stage.
I noticed in his interview after his game yesterday he mentioned some abuse he received from the crowd in his last appearance here in 2023 and he may well face something similar in this match as they’ll no doubt be a big German contingent as usual in the Alexandra Palace crowd.
Both players will be under huge pressure in this match as Clemens faces plummeting down the rankings with a loss and Robert Owen will lose his Tour Card with a loss here.
I can see this being a pretty nervy affair but I'm edging towards the German, purely because I assume he will have big support in the crowd and that can sometimes tilt a match in a players favour.
