Southampton have struggled to bridge the gap since getting promoted to the Premier League in May and with a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Russell Martin was given his marching orders. A new appointment should be in place soon, and there is a clear favourite for the job.
Below are the latest betting odds for Southampton's next permanent manager at the time of this post.
Southampton were always going to be beaten by Tottenham, and had the score been respectable, perhaps the outcome would have been different. However, conceding five in 45 minutes and your manager disappearing down the tunnel at 4-0 tells a story.
With only five points this season and a nine-point gap between themselves and Leicester City - who reside in 17th - there are no reasons to keep Russell Martin, simply because his football was not working and there was a refusal to change it.
We saw it with Burnley last season, a coach keeping their own 'brand' despite the failures of their team and getting a big move as a result of it, and had Martin been offered a 'better' job than Southampton, there would be no guarantees that he would stay past this season. For this reason, it is better to start a rebuild now, hopefully with a coach that will be there next season.
Let's go over the favourites to replace Russell Martin and the odds for each manager. It is also worth keeping in mind that reports suggest the next manager will be an international appointment - so we'd be wary of any prices of English coaches.
It is really no surprise to see Southampton looking at Danny Röhl. The German coach was formerly part of Ralph Hasenhüttl's coaching staff, and according to reports, there is a lot of interest in bringing him back to the club.
Like Martin, the coach has an attractive style of play, albeit different to the former coach, and has punched well above his weight with Sheffield Wednesday since his appointment last season.
His odds have been as low as Evens on Monday (December 16) morning, but they have drifted slightly in the past few hours. However, there have been quite a few suggestions about his potential appointment, and with his connections, it would not be a surprise if he was appointed.

I think the best appointment that could be made here is Corberan. The Spaniard has been one of the best coaches in the second division in recent years, perhaps I would say the best and a top-flight move will occur soon.
At Huddersfield Town he worked miracles and with West Bromwich Albion, he has done similarly well in equally difficult conditions, and with the Baggies sat in the play-offs again, it is a testament to his ability.
If I was in charge of making a new appointment, I'd be looking to the Spaniard with priority, and 13/2 is certainly a tempting price.

David Moyes is another interesting candidate, and again another right choice for the job, if the Saints were to make it. The Scotsman's work with West Ham United was nothing short of miraculous and whilst the wheels fell off slightly towards the end, it probably was not an issue with him, considering where things are now.
I think the Saints are quite likely to go down, for a multitude of reasons, and this makes me question whether Moyes would be willing to take the job, considering he is a European champion.
If there were a few more points on the board, I'm convinced his price would be better, but I think the 10/1 price is quite poor, with all factors considered.

Graham Potter and Simon Rusk follow on the odds chart next, but with reports from Sky, I'm doubtful about the chances of either being appointed considering both are from England. Potter is crying out for a new project, and I don't think Southampton is that, and the backlash to appointing Rusk permanently would be too high, so I'm not looking at either.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær is also listed, and this is an appointment that I think could be really good - additionally, I don't think he would leave if the Saints were to go down, so his 16/1 odds with Bet365 are worth considering.
Steve Cooper is also another coach who would fit the bill of what the South Coast outfit are probably looking for, and 16/1 is a decent price, but I'm unsure whether I'd be taking a punt on him compared to others on the list.

As of December 16, Southampton are best-priced at 1/16 to be relegated from the Premier League in 2024-25, so any manager coming in will have a huge job on their hands keeping the Saints up.
