There were some nice fixtures for those at the top end of League Two this weekend, and it has meant not much has changed. At the bottom, though, things are not looking pretty.

New Favourites

Walsall extended their winning run in midweek, with a narrow 1-0 result away to Oldham. Of course, it does not grab the headlines, but it is still notable, given that the hosts had only lost two home games all season before this.

With that win, the Saddlers are now four points clear at the top of the league, and it could already be a case of it being theirs to lose. There is a long way left to go this season, so no one will be getting carried away just yet.

However, with them at 4/1 to win the title, it could be a nice bit of value still available. They have been prone to inconsistencies, but this is a pretty decent gap, and it could only grow from here on out.

Sitting in second is Notts County, who have been equally as impressive lately, winning three of their last five games. The latest of those victories came against MK Dons in midweek, and this has really brought some attention to them.

Beating the long-standing title favourites is not an easy feat, and they must be respected for a promotion push, surely. Perhaps they can even enter the title conversation in the next few weeks.

For the Dons, it is another drop in a big moment, which they have been far too prone to this season. In fairness, it is their first league defeat since October and they are still the favourites to win the league title. However, with only eight points in their last five games, it says a lot about their quality compared to what was imagined at the start of the season.

They are certainly not out of the race, but they are six points away from the leaders, and the markets are now pricing them at 15/4 to win the title

Rounding off the automatic promotion spots, but not as favoured in the title race, is Swindon, whose defeat to Cheltenham midweek has certainly not helped. Had they won that game, the picture would be much different, with them on 37 points.

Nevertheless, that loss keeps them on 34, and they will be keen to rectify things this weekend.

Gap Closing?

The promotion picture is certainly quite interesting at this moment, largely because so many teams are in contention for a spot in the top seven. At present, Bromley sit in fourth as the ‘best of the rest’, as it were. They have won four of their last five games, and a 3-1 win in midweek against Crawley has brought up questions about how far they can go.

Cambridge have also turned things around quite heavily, and now sit in the play-off spots too. Whilst they have hit a bit of a lull in recent weeks, they are unbeaten in League Two since the end of October, so maybe they should be respected a little more.

Salford then take the final spot in the top seven, and they have also struggled a bit in recent weeks. With only one win in their last five, they have not been convincing recently. So, perhaps another look at them needs to be had.

Given the Ammies are sitting on 30 points, they are rather vulnerable at this moment. In fact, with 15th-placed Tranmere only four points away, things can change very quickly. It is probably the closest division in England at this moment.

This also gives us some nice top seven prices, though. For example, Salford are Evens with BetVictor for a top seven spot, whilst 13th-placed Grimsby are 8/5 with SpreadEx. There is certainly a lot of value left in the market.

Worrying for Some

Still glued to the bottom of the division is Newport County, but results have been slightly better this week. With two draws in their past two games, they are slowly and agonisingly picking up points whilst those above them do not take masses in.

2-2 draws with Barrow and Crewe - which they had 10 men in - are certainly not terrible results. Of course, they are nothing special. But if they can grab the odd win here and there, they may be able to get off the bottom.

Then, sitting above them is Harrogate Town, and it has certainly been coming. Their recent form has been terrible, with three defeats and two draws in their last five. However, the fact that their last League Two win came in September is telling.

It is no surprise that the best football bookmakers have them below Evens to go down. Even then, that could potentially be considered a bit of value for punters…
