Matchday 2 delivered us a little drama in League One this weekend. However, there will certainly be a few teams that are expecting a little bit more from their opening two weeks of football.
Another weekend has gone by in the League One calendar, and there are already a few teams standing out at both ends! As it's the second week, we are still basing outcomes on predictions of certain teams. So, without further ado, let's dive into it!
This weekend, we saw a few more teams strengthen their positions at the top of the League One table after last weekend, when every team won or lost. As a result, the table looks a little strange. However, we cannot complain.
We start things off at the top, where second-favourites for the league, Huddersfield Town, extended their fine form, beating Reading 2-0 away from home. Lee Grant's side dominated proceedings against a play-off hopeful, and this is only making Town fans more confident in their situation.
Following them in second is Barnsley, who have been quite a shock in the division so far. The Tykes did not spend massively in the summer. However, Conor Hourihane's team have been superb so far, scoring six goals - the most in the division - and winning both of their games.
Stockport County also continued their fine streak, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 away from home. A game that defined last year due to their league position, but it seems it may not be the same case this season.
Luton then rounded off the notable teams, respectively, winning their first two games. A 2-0 win away at Peterborough is a nice result, indeed, and they are clearly taking no notice of the situation in which they find themselves after back-to-back relegations.
As of right now, they are still the favourites to win the league this season with most bookmakers.
Below, we have collected the top teams - aside from the big favourites - and their respective odds to finish top 6 in the 2025/26 League One season.
Stevenage and Doncaster, perhaps a little disrespectfully, were not included in the title picture area of this article. However, that could change very soon. Both teams have kicked off the season magnificently.
Starting with Stevenage, a 1-0 win against Rotherham is not the most exciting result in the world. However, it is a big three points at home, which reinforces their position so far. Doncaster, on the other hand, nicked a 2-1 win against Mansfield away from home. Another strong result for them, too.
Cardiff could only pick up a draw on the second matchday of the season, facing Port Vale on Thursday night, which is bad enough in itself. Despite dominating possession, Brian Barry-Murphy's side were unable to break through much and are two points behind their rivals.
Elsewhere, Bolton Wanderers got off to a start against Plymouth Argyle, winning by two goals to nil and looking a class above the Pilgrims. New boy Mason Burstow also got his first goal for the club. A solid game, indeed.
Blackpool, Plymouth, Wycombe and Reading were all expected to be in and around this section this season. However, that is looking unlikely from the early stages!
Below, we have collected the top four teams and their respective odds to be relegated in the 2025/26 League One season.
Like I said last week, it is the early stages of things. So, positions can change very quickly. However, the first two weeks have not given many encouraging signs.
As it stands, the bottom six have yet to win a game. In that set of teams, four of them were expected to be fighting towards the top end of the division - again, there is time for things to change. Right now, though, that is not the case. In fact, it could be a long season.
We start at the bottom of the division, where Reading were beaten by Huddersfield at home. They have conceded the fewest goals of the relegation sides, but their lack of goals scored is keeping them at the bottom of the table for now. In fact, they are the only side so far yet to score a goal.
Plymouth follow on and after their relegation from the Championship, many expected them to fight towards the top of the division. Right now, though, this is not the case and they are struggling to find their feet.
Blackpool sit third from bottom, and have conceded the most goals in the division so far. Seven from their opening two is a really poor return, and conceding four to an Exeter City side who many predicted to go down is not a good look.
Peterborough then round off the bottom four. Their 2-0 loss against Luton certainly is not the worst result. However, they do need to start picking up shortly. The same goes for Wycombe, who will be disappointed after their loss to Stockport. However, it is not the end of the world.
As it stands, only two of the bookies' favourites to go down are in the bottom half. Both Port Vale and Northampton have picked up a point - both in this matchday - but they have a little cushion between themselves and the relegation spots for now.
