We have often focused on the play-off race this season, but now, the relegation zone is starting to look really dangerous, and the drop is looming for some.

Birmingham Run Rampant

Well, Birmingham City are just a bit good, aren't they? The Blues were once again on the end of three points this weekend, and they put in a six-star performance for their efforts, scoring six goals against Barnsley, who were a solid play-off contender at one point.

It is not the first humiliation that the Bluenoses have given this year, and it probably won't be the last. Chris Davies' side are a class above and that is very easy to tell.

Play-Off Picture Separates a Little

It's best to just dive into the picture at this point, given how much action there is to talk about. So, we head to Wrexham, who currently sit second in the division.

Whilst not as fiery as Birmingham's win, Wrexham still put on a show of their own at home, winning by three goals to nil at the Racecourse. In recent weeks, they have made that second-place spot their own and look set for another promotion.

In third, Wycombe were beaten for the second time in five games, falling to Reading away from home. Throughout the game, the Chairboys dominated, but were unable to convert any of their chances and paid for it in the end.

So now, a six-point gap exists between the two sides, which is a real worry for the latter, even if they do have a game in hand.

Then we head to the play-offs, where everything gets a little more exciting.

Sitting behind Wycombe on 74 points, just a point behind, is Stockport, who have been phenomenal since the start of 2025. Dave Challinor's side continues to pick up huge results, and they look very secure in the play-offs. However, I doubt their ability to reach that automatic place.

Keeping on the trend of short gaps, Charlton are on 73 points, and again, I feel like their position in the play-offs is quite secure, with them having an eight-point gap to 7th place.

Taking the last place currently is Bolton Wanderers, who won their second consecutive game in a row this weekend. Whilst only winning by a single goal, it is another huge win for the Whites, and they are well on their way to securing a place in the play-offs.

Reading, who beat Wycombe this weekend, then follow behind, and Huddersfield then sit in eighth, though with a game against the Chairboys in midweek. The teams are all very bunched at the moment, so it will change on a game-by-game basis.

Relegation Calling

Things at the bottom are still to be decided, but as the weeks pass, the drop seems more inevitable for some than others.

Shrewsbury, after drawing their last game, returned to losing ways this weekend, failing to beat fellow strugglers Cambridge United at home. I think we can almost call their time in League One to an end.

Sitting 13 points behind 20th, they are pretty much done, even if a miraculous escape is still possible mathematically.

Whilst not as extreme, and supported by the weekend's win, I'd be inclined to say the same about Cambridge, given they too have a decent gap to shorten before they can even consider an escape.

Crawley also fell this weekend, and were well beaten by Stevenage away from home, and I must say they are looking unconvincing here too, which only furthers my worries about them in the final parts of the season.

Finally, we have Burton, whom I have said for a while look most probable to escape the bottom four. Despite their loss this weekend, the Brewers still sit three points away from Bristol Rovers, who have not picked up a point in their last five games.

This is without even considering the game in hand, held by Burton, and I think we could see them outside the relegation zone as early as midweek.
