We would normally wait until the weekend's fixtures to offer a round-up, but the latest set of midweek games has seen a milestone reached in League One.

Birmingham Win Promotion With Six Left

All season, we have spoken about how good Birmingham City are, and their midweek fixture showed us nothing different. Away to Peterborough, the Blues managed to secure a 2-1 win in the first half, and as a result, they have now confirmed that they will play Championship football once again next season.

It was an inevitable fact after the money spent in the summer, and their return has felt like a matter of when, not if, throughout this year. So the next question is, when will the title arrive?

There is currently a 14-point gap to second place, and with the Bluenoses having a game in hand, that could be extended to 17 points. However, the Midlands club must wait, given they have a chance to secure another piece of silverware this weekend - the Vertu trophy, where they will meet Peterborough once again.

Wycombe Close the Gap

Given there wasn't much to discuss at the bottom of the division in midweek, we wanted to create a new segment. Tied in with the fact that Birmingham have now secured the league, we look at the odds for the automatic spot.

Wrexham currently hold second place, with 81 points, and with four wins in their past five games, drawing the other. Then, Wycombe sit behind them, and now the two sit on an even number of fixtures.

The Chairboys were, for a long time, the chasers of Birmingham, but have experienced a bit of a tumultuous few months, so they have fallen a little. Nevertheless, a win against Huddersfield Town in midweek has closed the gap once again to three points.

It is certainly shaping up to be an interesting final few games of the season, but if you are a fan of the Red Dragons, you would certainly be getting more confident.

Play-Offs Probably Secure for Two

With the two teams fighting above the play-offs, so to speak, at least one spot has already been taken. So, there are only three teams that can get into the play-offs, unless something miraculous happens.

At present, though, it looks like only one spot will become available.

Stockport and Charlton, who were not in action in midweek, currently sit on 74 and 73 points respectively, which seems like quite a nice bumper to secure a play-off place, as shown in the Odds Watch earlier this week.

We then move to Reading, who picked up three huge points away from home at Shrewsbury, scoring three times. Considering they also beat Wycombe in midweek, it is a huge result which could motivate the team to get across the line at the final few hundred metres.

Bolton and Huddersfield, the two chasers sitting seventh and eighth, respectively, both played in midweek too, but neither were successful. Both had home games, but this did not matter with the Wanderers beaten 1-0 by Rotherham, and the Terriers falling short against Wycombe.

There is still time to bridge the gap to sixth, especially for Bolton, who only need a two-point swing. However, it seems like things may be as good as done for Huddersfield.

Shrewsbury Fall Lower

Only one team at the bottom was in action in midweek, and it was Shrewsbury against Reading. The Royals ran out 3-1 winners against the Shrews, who sit bottom of the division, and whilst you thought there was no hope before this game of survival, it seems those chances have somehow gotten even lower. It is certainly not a good sign.
