Market Opportunity?

Last week, I started with the leaders of the odds, and now, with the market again proving to be volatile, it is best to look at the league leaders, who are Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds have been exceptional this season so far, and this weekend's win was yet another proving point of why they are exceptionally positioned for a move back towards the Championship.

A 4-0 win against Plymouth Argyle, who were also relegated from the Championship last season, proves the difference between the two, and to win so convincingly is a real sign of how good Brian Barry-Murphy's team actually are.

They are then followed by Luton in the market, who sit four points behind the leaders, but are priced at the same point of 10/3. So far, they lack the consistency that is needed to win the league title, with their season being rather stop-start.

Winning 3-0 against Burton Albion away from home is a really good result, and this proves why they are being so strongly backed in the market.

So, those two are the real leaders for the bookmakers right now, and have the best chance of making an instant return to the Championship with the title in hand. However, there are a few other candidates.

Huddersfield, despite their loss to Barnsley at the weekend, are the most likely to win the league after the aforementioned duo. Sitting at 6/1, there are certainly questions that can be asked of Lee Grant's side, but it is early enough that market movements like this are going to happen based on one result.

Yorkshire Dominates the Talk

Of the top six right now, four teams are from Yorkshire, and if we're being specific, there is an even split between the South and West. Interestingly, though, there were also a few big games within the county this weekend.

Stevenage sit atop the sides listed in the 'Top Six' battle, and the Boro are still in a phenomenal place, winning their fifth game of the six that have been played. The latest came this weekend against Wycombe Wanderers, a fantastic result considering last season's placings.

There is a real conversation to be had about their situation and whether they can make it to the end of the season in a similar position.

Then, we get to Yorkshire.

Bradford City currently sit in third, and are 9/4 with some bookmakers for a spot in the top six later this season. Against Wimbledon, who were in League Two with them last season, they picked up a 3-2 win.

Though narrow, it is a big win as it proves that there is a gap between the two, despite them being promoted at the same time.

Doncaster also picked up a big win in their game against Rotherham, who are a fellow South Yorkshire side. The latter are not involved in the promotion race currently, but Donny added another three big points to their already impressive record.

Finally, Huddersfield and Barnsley faced off at Oakwell, and the hosts picked up a massive three points, making the Terriers look more vulnerable than they have all season. A big win at home in the circumstances, but proof that they can compete against one of the league's heavyweights.

Worrying Already

There are several teams at the bottom of the League One stable that probably should not be. However, there are no real signs of things changing, at least not yet.

Burton currently top the relegation markets across the board, though there is not much in it. Their 3-0 loss to Luton is certainly not that bad a result, and the magnitude of the loss could certainly have had an exaggerated effect on the odds.

They are in a safe place for now, on four points, but they certainly need to start picking up the odd point or two here and there.

Sitting in second on the market is Peterborough United, who actually sit at the bottom of the League One table. So far, they have only picked up a point this season, and a 3-0 loss is quite bad in this case.

When it comes to Exeter City, a team that many expected to struggle this season rather than Luton, this is where the issue arises. That is also why the market now has them at the same price as Burton for relegation. Right now, only one bookmaker has them above 8/11 (8/13).

The three clubs that follow at the bottom of League One where Wycombe Wanderers, Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool.

Of that group, Argyle are the lowest price from the bookmakers, and they are shortening quickly, with a price of 7/4 now available for the Pilgrims to see another relegation in another year.
