Championship odds watch round 28

The Championship is often described as the most entertaining in the world, and the 2024/25 season is proving to be no different. Four teams could win the title right now, and we are in for a fantastic few months.

Five Points Split Four Teams at the Top

We are currently witnessing one of the best title races in recent Championship memory. There are four teams who are all fighting for the trophy at the end of the season, and it is really difficult to pick a winner at present.

For the bookmakers, it is seemingly easier. Leeds United currently sit atop of the division, and the bookies have them as heavy favourites to win the league at the second time of asking under Daniel Farke.

The Whites overcame Norwich City on Wednesday night, who are certainly no pushovers, and they remain at the top of the table. For the price though, it is not worth getting on board I must admit.

Sheffield United follow next in the table and the odds. Chris Wilder's men didn't fall completely off during a difficult festive period, so to still be sat second is a testament to his work. A win against Swansea in Wales is a huge result for a mid-week game, so their credentials are being proven once again.

Following them is Burnley, who pummelled Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday night. A 5-0 thrashing is always enjoyable for supporters on the right side of that scoreline, and the Clarets will be full of confidence despite overcoming an easy opponent.

Sunderland round off the title battle, and dare I say, I think there could be some value in the Black Cats. They are at a massively high price, and whilst they are five points off of Leeds, they could perhaps sneak into the automatic promotion spots. For those of you who have read my League One odds watches recently, you know where I'm going here.

The Wearside team are 20/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral, which is the best odds including an Each Way place. So, if Sunderland finish second, you would effectively have odds of 10/1 for them to go up automatically, with it being 20/1 if they win the league. A hint of value perhaps.

Play-Offs Too Difficult to Call

There are only six 'promotion' spots to fill, and we've covered four teams in the title section, so this area is going to look a little short. However, that is understandable in my opinion.

Middlesbrough still are well in the fight for the play-offs. Despite their fluctuating form, they are still a solid shout for a top-six finish in my eyes, though this could change by the end of the window, depending on the incomings and outgoings (thank you Captain Obvious!).

Pre-season top scorer hope Emmanuel Latte Lath could be heading away from Teesside, which would be a blow to their hopes definitely, however, the club have recruited well recently.

For me, they are my most confident prediction out of those remaining for a play-off place.

Below them sit Blackburn Rovers, but back-to-back losses against Oxford United and Coventry City just make it difficult to back this team, especially with fan frustrations growing once again. It's certainly not a selection I'm not looking at.

West Bromwich Albion could make a push into the playoffs, but I'm unsure about how much Tony Mowbray will be able to do with the Baggies, especially compared to the work of Carlos Corberan.

A team that might, and with heavy emphasis on might, be able to put together a late charge is Coventry City. Their squad has underperformed massively this season and they are only seven points away from a play-off spot. It is definitely speculative, but if they can string some results together, it is not too unfathomable. The price of 15/2 for a spot in the top six in May is certainly a temptation.

Dead, Buried and Everyone Else Above Plymouth

This season, the Championship has only got two relegation spots available with Plymouth's position seemingly waiting to be confirmed at this point.

Under Wayne Rooney, the Pilgrims were bad. Unfortunately, sacking him has not made them any better and the aforementioned 5-0 loss to Burnley in midweek has some bookmakers pricing the drop at 1/500 for Plymouth.

Morgan Whittaker, or should I say, the only hope of keeping them up, is set to depart, so it seems that they are destined for the drop. So which other two teams could join them?

We start with Luton Town, who are in real trouble. We saw with Huddersfield Town in recent seasons how badly relegation from the Premier League can be, and the Hatters are proving it once again.

Matt Bloomfield could not change the side's fortunes in this game week, but they will be hoping for a change sharpish.

Hull City also don't look brilliant and haven't for some time, so they are in with a real chance of the drop as well. January addition rumours are not the most exciting for the Tigers so I'll be keeping an eye on the price over the next few weeks.

Derby County, Stoke City and Cardiff City are also possible contenders for the drop. I'd suggest the former two more so than Cardiff, just because whilst Cardiff aren't winning games, they are not losing, so they are not in a position as difficult as the other two.
