The £100,000 tournament concludes today at The Dome, as we look towards finals day at the Bahrain Masters. Tonight, we will crown a winner of the first World Series event of the season. The quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final will all be played this evening, so the survival of the fittest will be on the agenda today.
Seven PDC stars survived the first round with just Rob Cross succumbing 6-3 to the in-form Paolo Nebrida in the first match of last night's session. Chris Dobey and Luke Humphries both hit 4 180s each and whitewashed their opponents 6-0 in the first round. Gerwyn Price, Luke Littler, and Peter Wright all came through tricky ties 6-3 whilst Stephen Bunting and Nathan Aspinall both won 6-2 to progress into tonight's Quarter Finals.
The World Number 1, Luke Humphries had the performance of the first round with an effortless 103.66 average. All of the other PDC winners had 90+ averages and looked solid so we could be in for a very entertaining marathon session of darts in Bahrain.
Luke Littler looked slightly off in his first-round victory, but I think we can forgive him after recently becoming the World Champion. He was also using a brand new set of darts after framing the set he lifted the Sid Waddell trophy with. Just from personal experience of trying to break in a new set of darts, it's never easy and can sometimes create a little doubt in your mind until you feel comfortable again.
'The Nuke' still did well to come through a potential banana skin with Lourence Illagan though and averaged 94.36. That's his lowest average on TV for some time and he will need to improve on that if he's to defend his Bahrain Masters title.
Similarly to Littler, Gerwyn Price was also trying out new equipment and played with a longer point in his darts for the first time. He said himself they felt good but were landing awkwardly in the board which is never a great sign for a pro dart player. The Welshman is going back to his previous points this evening though so should feel much more comfortable.
'The Iceman' beat the impressive Lok Yin Lee 6-3 with a 92.68 average and hit 5 180s. He won't be very happy with that performance but will be pleased his scoring is still solid.
This is the first time these two have met since last year's World Series event in Australia which is very surprising considering how many times they play in the same tournament. Personally, I think Price is very close to being back to his best and will be up for it tonight.
Beating Littler would send a big statement out to the field and it wouldn't surprise me if he did so especially as he's gone back to his original setup. Littler for me just doesn't look overly comfortable and if he doesn't sharpen up and get used to these darts quickly then I can see Price taking advantage, but it should be a close contest.
