Southampton have been dismal since returning to the Championship, and Will Still was sacked this weekend as a result. Now, a new name needs to come forward. However, it could end up being a repeat...
Below are the latest betting odds for Southampton's next permanent manager at the time of this post.
| Bookie | Next Manager | Odds | Visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Russell Martin | 7/4 | Bet |
| Michael Carrick | 11/2 | Bet |
| Brendan Rodgers | 8/1 | Bet |
| Ralph Hasenhuttl | 8/1 | Bet |
| Lee Carsley | 10/1 | Bet |
When you have a year like Southampton did last season, you have to get the next appointment spot on. However, they did not, at least now, with the gift of hindsight, we can say that. Will Still stated that his players seemed like they needed permission to play in a different style, on a few occasions, too.
In other words, it seems the mental effect that last season had is lasting. So, the next manager has to be the right one, otherwise they will be a relegation candidate this season...
Let's go over the favourites to replace Will Still and the odds for each manager.
Returning to an ex goes well on very rare occasions, and I don't think it is the occasion for either party. Martin got them into the Premier League, but a lot of time has passed, and neither the club nor him look appealing.
After a very short stint at Rangers, this just does not seem like a move to be confident about. In fact, I think this is one that should be ruled out. He is not what Southampton need and vice versa.

Michael Carrick would be a really interesting appointment, I must say. The former Boro manager was fired last season, and now his old club are flying, which has probably lit a fire in his belly.
Carrick displayed several promising qualities in the North East, so this could be a chance to get back into the dugout, even if it is a much different task for him. At 11/2, it is certainly very interesting.

Looking elsewhere, there are a few decent options. However, I cannot see a move for any of the other three favourite candidates. All three probably have their eyes elsewhere, so I'd be wary of considering a move for them.
Alex Revell could be an interesting shout at 14/1; his Stevenage team are among the best in League One currently, and with the Saints' squad, he could certainly provide a bit of a boost.
At the time of writing this, Steven Gerrard's odds are shortening (now 10/1 in places, but 16/1 at BetVictor). I think this would be another intriguing appointment, and it gives him a chance to tackle English management again.

As of November 3, Southampton are 3/1 for a place in the play-offs at the end of the season. It is certainly a lofty target to reach, but not an impossible one. They are still quite favoured for a top-half finish, too, so their season is far from done.
