Southampton have been a ticking time bomb where relegation was concerned. Yesterday, that bomb officially blew up and Ivan Juric has been cast out with the rubble less than 24 hours later.

It is imperative that the Saints get the next appointment right, though, as they look to bounce back next season. We look at what the odds tell us about who could be in the hot seat come August.

Who Will the Next Southampton Manager Be?

Below, we assess the favourites to take charge of Southampton following the sacking of Ivan Juric, as per the odds of the bookmakers.

Danny Rohl 1/2

If there is one positive to come out of Southampton becoming a laughing stock in the Premier League, it could be that they have been able to pull the trigger quickly on Ivan Juric. That means they will steal a march on other clubs looking to change manager this summer and Danny Rohl could be the man.

Rohl, 35, arrived at Sheffield Wednesday to steer what looked to be a cursed ship when they were marooned bottom of the Championship table last season, having taken three points from a possible 33. Not only did the former Leipzig coach turn around results but he did so with a decent style of play and good communication too.

What has followed this season has been another impressive campaign, albeit one where the Owls will now come up short in what was always an ambitious shot at a top-six finish. A proven track record in the Championship, a high ceiling and a connection with Southampton, where Rohl was assistant to Ralph Hassenhuttl for nine months, make him a sound candidate.

Liam Rosenior 6/1

A Championship club with parachute payments might appeal to former Hull boss Liam Rosenior, but a lot of that might depend on how he ends this season with Strasbourg.

Rosenior is enjoying his time in Ligue 1 in what is his first adventure overseas as a coach. At Strasbourg, he is tracking just shy of a 50% win ratio across all competitions and has the club very much in the hunt for a top-three finish; that would secure Champions League football next season. If they secure that, he is unlikely to trade it in for a Championship job.

You can see why Southampton might want Rosenior, though. He has done a good job in each of the three positions he’s held in his managerial career, including a dozen-game stint as caretaker at Derby, with most feeling his sacking at Hull at the end of last season was incredibly harsh after the Tigers side narrowly missed out on a playoff finish.

They are in danger of relegation this season, which perhaps shows the level of achievement he managed there albeit they did lose some players last summer.

Simon Rusk 6/1

Having Simon Rusk as a 6/1 shot is just a lazy tag from the bookies. Don’t waste your money on backing such an appointment. Rusk is only in the running by default as he has been named interim coach until the end of the season, such is natural when he was already a First Team Coach at the club.

Sure, Rusk could now steer Southampton to a 100% record to end the season, which might see us with egg on faces but, realistically, that won’t happen.

With Southampton having put up such a limp fight this season to consign them to a second Championship campaign in three years, they cannot afford to get their next managerial appointment wrong. As such, it would be a disaster for the Saints should Rusk start next season in the dugout.

Steve Cooper 10/1

You cannot knock the career Steve Cooper has had to date, with the Welshman having proven himself more than competent to coach teams towards the top end of the Championship whilst, as proven at Nottingham Forest, he has been able to keep a side up in the Premier League as well.

Despite that, the chance of Cooper heading to St Mary's just doesn't feel likely. Southampton fans would be underwhelmed with the move and would point to a failure at Leicester earlier this season as evidence.

Cooper, meanwhile, might feel a better offer could come his way given what he achieved at Forest, particularly with the likes of Leeds potentially winning promotion to the Premier League and still perhaps looking to make a change in the dugout.
