Manager Search Continues for Wycombe

Following a strong first half of the League One season, Wycombe manager Matt Bloomfield was poached by struggling Championship side Luton Town. It has been two weeks since and the Chairboys are still looking for the right replacement, with Sam Grace taking on an interim role in the meantime.

Adding insult to injury, Bloomfield has since been interested in taking Wycombe's star striker Richard Kone to Luton, and this would make any incoming manager's job infinitely more difficult. Furthermore, the options - dare I say - are quite boring.

Initially, there were some quite bold suggestions linked to the job, but they are certainly not as intriguing now and this makes me quite worried about the rest of their season.

Next Wycombe Manager Odds - The Bookies Favourites

There is one clear favourite for the Wycombe job as things stand, but it is still worth taking a look at the top candidates as things have been known to change quickly before.

Lee Johnson - 4/6

Currently, Lee Johnson is the favourite to get the Wycombe job, but we have seen this does not guarantee that he will get the job by any means.

Johnson has been an EFL stalwart for many years and most of his career has been spent in the Championship and League One, so a move to promotion-chasing Wycombe makes sense in some ways.

However, the manager's stock has fallen massively in recent years. After poor spells with Hibernian and Fleetwood Town, he is not a manager that excites me, like Bloomfield did, so I don't like the idea of this appointment.

Ian Evatt - 4/1

Evatt, in many ways, holds a similar position to what Bloomfield did. After the departure of Keith Hill from Bolton, the club were in a difficult place, and then in came Evatt.

In his time at the club, the 43-year-old took the club back to League One after their relegation to League Two, whilst also having the side in and around the League One play-offs in recent years.

Furthermore, he won the EFL Trophy, which was another sign of his ability to cultivate a dressing room.

Unfortunately, things got quite rocky for the coach, and a move away from Bolton seemed likely since the early parts of the season. With rumours of discontent in the dressing room, Evatt departed earlier in January.

It is a move that definitely could have potential if it were to happen, but again, it is not a massively inspiring move.

Rasmus Bertelsen - 12/1

Bertelsen's Randers FC side have been great this season, only losing three games in the Danish league so far this season. At 41 years old, he can still get better in the years to come, so it is a move with potential.

However, Football League World reported that the Chairboys have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of the Dane, so it may not be possible to finalise a move for the head coach. Definitely one to avoid for now.

The Odds Elsewhere

Ashley Cole's name has been thrown into the mix, which opens up questions about the head coach that the club are going for, definitely. Like Johnson, and arguably Evatt, the former left-back is not too much of an inspiring option on the face of it.

Des Buckingham and Claus Norgaard remain in the fold it seems, however, their odds have massively drifted, which is really off-putting.

It is certainly a difficult role to come into given Bloomfield's successes. However, the options, especially compared to the names linked two weeks ago, are not too inspiring, we must admit.

Odds on Wycombe to Get Promoted

bet365 logo

As of January 28, Wycombe are best-priced at 8/13 to be promoted to the Championship in the 2024-25 season. The appointment must be right, if it isn't I can only see the Chairboys sliding.
